mellow loads for 45-70
« on: January 27, 2007, 01:38:14 PM »
I bought one box of fed 300g with my new 45-70 handi just to try it out.  Now I've got to get dies and load some up since I CANNOT spend $25.00+ for ammo.  Anyone have any recommendations on dies (I usually use Lee) as well as some "mellow/enjoyable" loads to shoot?  This is going to be a plinker (jacketed) and foul weather deer rifle.  Any help would be appreciated as always!

I've got RCBS, and LEE dies for the 45-70.  Seems I am always grabbing the LEE dies. They just seem to work better.

A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

I use RCBS dies and I am quite happy with them. My plinking load for the 45/70 is 12gr of Unique behind a 405gr Laser cast for around 1250fps from my BC

I use the Lee 3 die set, have no complaints what so ever, but if I were buying a die set now, I'd get the Hornady New Dimension die set, their bullet seater is the cat's meow. You'll also want to get a Lyman "M" die, specially if you shoot cast bullets, but it works well for jacketed too.

hunterwinco - What a coincidence! A 45-70 just followed me home today as well, and I was looking for some loads. Congrats on your new NEF!  I'm with you on the cost of ammo; I got the Remington 405gr for $27.50. Time to spring for some dies & components.

stimpylu32 - With the Unique load, do you use a filler? I've used Blue Dot in .223, but it doesn't need a filler because the case is so small.
Life was so much simpler when I thought I knew everything...

28gr of Alliant 2400 and the 350gr Hornady RN is a real nice shooter in the 22" Handi, very accurate and easy on the shoulder, it's a favorite of many old timers here. The target below was shot with my peep sighted 22" .45-70 using this load and my poor old eyes!! :D There was a sight adjustment tween shots 2 and 3, and again tween 3 and 4 to correct the over adjustment tween 2 and 3, the WGRS leaves a bit to be desired in adjustments.

Greg Mushial has a bunch of low velocity cast bullet data on his web site.

Congrats guys on your 45-70's ---  :) :) :)

Definitely one of the most flexible cartridges to reload. If you want to shoot "mellow" loads maybe consider using either traditional real black powder if you can obtain easily or if you want try one of the several --- easier to cleanup -- substitutes such as 777 or American Pioneer. Personally I don't care for pyrodex from cleanup point of view.   --- Remember using these powders don't load with any air space left in the shell between powder and bullet or wad.

The reduced velocity and resultant recoil will be much more friendly ---  compared to full level smokeless.

Happy hunting and shooting ... Bob.

The 12 grains of Unique is a great load but my favorite and most accurate is the 28.0 grains of 2400 load that Quick mentioned....<><.... :)

I just happen to shoot "mellow loads"!

This is 12.0 gr of Green Dot, no fillers with a Rem 405 gr JSP at 100 yards about 1050 fps (1.0").

This is the same load using 12.0 gr of Universal at 100 yards about 1000 fps (1.5").

And this is 20.0 gr of Blue Dot with a 300 gr Rem JHP at 100 yards about 1480 fps (1.25").

All use standard primers in R-P brass and no fillers.  I use a 3-9X Bushnell on a 22" barrel.

Shot my 45-70 today. Factory 'trapdoor' loads. Mild recoil----accurate
