How the vent hole go driller
« on: January 16, 2007, 12:04:51 PM »
A while ago I made post describing a mortar which was given to me. I believed it was a Hern. Rickk posts confirmed that.  In my orginal  post I made ref. to the drilling of the vent hole was a story in it's self.  Rickk wanted to hear the story............so here goes.

Take a winter night, a garage full of motorcycle guys, lots of beers with funny names (I'm not a beer drinker), bring out a mortar for show and tell w/o a vent hole drilled, after a guy just got done showing off his new zillion volts, unlimited watts, mega tourqe new I can drill through anythilng battery drill. Now every group has to have an instagtor, ours is an PHD phycilogest. His low keyed comment " do you think that mighty nice looking drill really could drill through that?, (pointing to the mortar)

This of course causes a discussion, and conclusions based on beer more than anything else. So someone says I bet it cann't and then someones says I bet ilt can and now the beer betting, not the betting of beer but rather betting by those who consumed much beer.

Then the PHD (whose garage we were in) sez in a "stoned" voice "I just happen to have the proper sizsed bit right here(in his hand) of course this takes the discussion to another level. After a while it was decided to see if this new battery drill the size of which could havae provied enough power to lite upn the city I live in could drill a vent hole.  "I though what the hell" what do I have to loose.

Well the guy with the drill revs it up like a kid with a hot rod at the stop light challanging all, then slips in the drill bitt gives it a couple of more rev's. A couple of beer filled guys hold the mortal on the floor, about as steady as they could wallk (they were not driving any motor vehs). The guy with the overpowered drill knelt down on the mortal with an unsteady knee and with a beer steady hand started to drill. He wasn't swayinhg to smuch and the bit was going through the metal, until it just borke nthrough. Yes, you gussed it. The bit broke.

Not to worry, was the concesious, we'll just drill the old one out. So a smaller bit was put in the drill and the "steady" drill crew went at it again, and yep, that bit angled off to the side of the broken bit and broke along side of it.  O-Boy! now two bit's broken in the vent hole. The Stoned PHD guy who started it all, thinks the answer is a biger drill bit to drill both broken bits out. Well the zillion volt, mega tourqe drill seemed up to the take, but the orginal "steady" drill team was voted out, it was replaced by a less "steady" drill team. Well they wobble and drilled and wobbled and drilled until that bit borke off on top of the other two bits.

Opps!!!!!!!!!!!!! I'm using my lap top as my table top PC took a dump and I haven't had it fixed yet. I don't know what happened but the lap top made some binging noise a couple of times in succession, when I leaned on the keyboard. And the next thing I find out this story is out on the board before I could use spell check, and now everyone knows now I can't spell for sheet!        Well to finish the story.........

Now I wasn't to worried with the first two bits being broken off as I was going to drill a larger hole than those two for a removable vent, but when the bigger drill bit broke off , I said enough was enough.  About this time the last guy walks in, the stoned guy who was late due to red wine drinking,(also a PHD) wanted to know why the mortar wasn't steadied in the vice and why the drill press wasn't used. Stoned and full of red wine he was the only one who made sense

Now that I had some drill bits to get out. No problem, I would put the mortar on the drill press secure it and drill out the other bits, Guess what! it doesn't work that way. I even spent big money at the welding shop on the best bit they had and of course that didn't work.  Then I went to get a little help form my friends, we tried diamond dermal bits, punches, drivers, hammering, and a lot of stuff I don't remember.

Then it was off the the local motorcycle gang's rebuilding shop. There are a couple of guys that seem to be able to do just about anything with metal, and I needed them to work some magic on my mortar vent.  So as I was explaining what happened and what I needed, they gave me a dumb look and said "What do you want us to do"  I got a little hot and said get them dammed  broken bits out of the mortar vent!!!!!!!!!!!!!  They gave that mystified look and said what bits?  Unknown to me the broken bits fell out as the mortar rolled about in the car trunk as I drove to the cycle shop.

I drilled, tapped and installed my removalable vent.

The moral of the story...........well lots but let's not go there

A broken bit or tap is a real problem. You need a friend with an EDM.  We removed hardened pins from an aluminum bipod on a 57mm RR.  No damage to the bipod.

While you are on the subject of EDM's.  There is a catalog titled Lindsay's Technical Books.  They have an extensive list of books from how to run a lathe to building your own shop equipment.  In the catalog is a book on how to build an EDM.  Catalog is free.  www.lindsaybks.com           Dom

From time to time we've had to remove broken bits and other tooling in places were EDM is out of the question.  Using a milling machine (or at worst a magnetic drill) a carbide bit(s) will chip out the tooling - sometimes it consumes more than one carbide bit.

Good story!

Interesting story Powder2burn. I pretty much guessed that my story would have gone the same way, so I didn't mess with the drills at all and had it EDM'ed as a first choice.

How close to the bottom of the bore does your hole enter the chamber?

Rickk

I don't know. The cannon is there and I'm here with the computer and the next time there I will measure the vent hole to rear of breach and when I return here I will post the measurement.
