45 Colt

Just got my 260 grn hard cast lead bullets from Beartooth.
Now I need a good load for deer in a 14 in bbl. Can someone pt. me in the right direction.
I have ck. the load manuals, just thought you might have a pet load for the Contender.

old coach,

What barrel are you shooting the .45 Colt from?   

I bought a T/C 10" stainless .45/.410 barrel thinking I could have some fun at the skeet club with it and maybe also do some deer hunting with it.  When I got the barrel, I realized the chamber wasn't quite optimum for .45 Colt use, to say the least.  The sights leave a lot to be desired, too.  In hindsight, I wish I had done more research before ordering the barrel, but I have had a lot of fun shooting .410 shotshells with it.

I haven't fired a round of .45 through it yet.  Are most Contender .45 Colt shooters using aftermarket barrels chambered just for the pistol round?

I have both a 10" octagon .45/.410 with the external choke and a 12" bull .45 (not .410).  With the .45/.410 I use only jacketed bullets, as the jump to the rifling is so long as to cause lead stripping and really, really, really bad leading.  Even with jacketed bullets the accuracy is nothing to write home about - much less than we typically get from Contenders.  The plain .45 Colt barrel, on the other hand, likes both lead and jacketed bullets.  My favorite load in this one uses H110 and a 265 gr. WFN from LBT.
