reforming .308 brass to .243
« on: January 14, 2007, 05:05:39 PM »
Has anyone used any 308 brass reformed to .243 in  a handi?or any rifle?
I ran some through the full length sizing die and all went ok, but it seems the necks are a bit thick. The reformed(empty) brass wont extract from the rifle when it's opened, while the fireformed  factory Winch..243 brass thats been neck resized in lee collet die extracts with no problems.
I'm thinking I've found a way to get some real accurate handloads if I neck turn them for a snug fit so there will be almost no neck expansion(yes I know you need some clearance  to keep pressures from going through the roof.)Now I've got to add a neck turning tool to the list of things I need to buy ::)  Does it ever end?

I have been using necked down 308 brass in my 243 since I got it. Its not a handi (savage) but no problems here.

The only problem is that the 243 is 0.030 longer than the 308.
The shorter case will leave a bigger gap in the chamber neck which tends to fill in with carbon. You will have to make sure that this carbon is removed frequently or accuracy goes to pots.

I had a 243AI chamber that was 2.066" so I made brass fro 30-06 for a tight 0.005" gap. You may want to measure your chamber length and see what you got.

As far as neck reaming goes you should also know the chamber neck diameter.
A radial loaded neck clearance of 0.001" is plenty. I made mine 0.0006" which is the amount of spring back which requires no neck sizing, just seat a new bullet.

Fred, that's where I read about it too his website is very informative.I'll have to check the lengths,I've left my dial calipersa at work over the weekend.I usually clean very thoroughly so the carbon/krud buildup shouldn't become an issue.
