iron sight height
« on: January 03, 2007, 12:23:01 PM »
Hello,

I just picked up my first Contender (a G2) and an older 14" 44 Mag barrel.  It has a very tall rear sight and I am wondering if this sight will allow me to zero at 50 yards with factory 240 grain.  The top of the rear sight blade is .670" above the barrel surface at the lowest setting.  The front sight is .505" above the barrel surface.

I have read on the forum that there are 3 rear sights - low, medium, & high.  Can anyone tell me which I need and which I currently have?

Thanks

My chart shows that barrel should have a High Rear Sight and a #7 Front Sight.

My chart also shows that the rear sight should have a BLADE HEIGHT of .270 (this is not the height you measured, but the actual blade height.  The front sight should be .50 which is the height from the bottom of the sight (barrel) to the top of the blade.

That combo should work since 240 gr is a pretty standard loading for the 44.

Bullseye,

Thank you very much.  This info is exactly what I needed.  I just measured my rear blade and it is about .270" tall.

Looks like I am ready to go shoot some tennis balls at 50 yards!

Thanks again

Chart?

Is there a chart somewhere to know what barrels came with what?  I'd love to have one of those, if it's online somewhere, please let me know.  I have a couple barrels I got used that I am skeptical about the sights being correct, just haven't had enough time to fool with them.  Also would love it if there is a page somewhere that discusses different generation sights, since they have changed over time.

Yep there is a chart.  The ones I have were scanned and posted in this forum.  Might try a search although that never works for me.  I can look at my printout and give you the exact link to the post which would get you there, but it will be Monday night before I get a chance to do that.

Sorry for the delay in getting back with you, the power supply on my DSL Modem went belly up.  Hope this works.

Well that kind of worked, the easiest charts to use are in zero's post and there does not seem to be a link to them, just a red X.  Not sure how to get there, maybe he will stop by and help us out.
