Reline 45 ACP barrel to smaller caliber?
« on: December 29, 2006, 03:58:34 AM »
I posted this in the 1911 forum but may be a better site here.
Has anyone tried to reline, or succeded in relining, a 45 barrel to a smaller caliber?
I'd like to take a couple of shot out 45 barrels and ream them out to about .468 with a larger section at the chamber area reamed out to about .531 and then turn a barrel blank to fit his.
Then finish off the chamber end and muzzle, then rechamber.
I thought I had read something about this but cannot find my links nor my notes.
Anybody inflicted this pain on themselves?
My goal is to end up with a 38 special barrel and a 38 AMU barrel for my 1911 frame.
If successful, then maybe 30 Luger and some others.
Thanks.

Added this after some comments:
Thanks again for the answers.
First I have multiple frames to work with on this project.
And I don't want to have to go to the purchase route.
Buying another frame/barrel is not what I want to do.
I have a 9mm frame and a 40 S&W frame.
Have tools and etc to make up a 45 frame if I want/need to.
I also have 38 super slide and barrel plus a 45 kit barrel and slide plus additional barrel ie 38/45.
I'm comfortable rechambering so that's not a problem.
Ejector problem understood and is/can be solved as well.
Magazines are not a problem as I have them.
Have an assortment of recoil springs in various weights.
Have AMU brass as well.
And as with the 38/45, can form and reload anything, well maybe almost anything,  I decide to make up.
My main question is how others have lined barrels and what methods were used to retain the sleeve.
Were they made as press fits?
Were they silver soldered?
Were they pinned in?
Were they loc-tited(a word?).
Were the sleeves turned with two diameters, with the chamber end being of a larger diameter.(this is my present plan of attack)
I'm not trying to be a smart a55 but I am going to do this, and only want any experience others have had doing this, if any.
I may not get the project done this year, or even next year, but I will proceed with it.
Thanks again for all answers.

Not trying to sound negative, but as I noted, I'm asking about experience, not advise on how to buy a barrel.
I'd appreciate any input from anyone who has done any relining work on the 1911 system.
Thanks.

Being relatively low pressure cartridges it should be possible. While I've not had this particular affliction I've relined barrels and used soft solder to hold the liners in place. I've also heard of those using AcraGlass to bond the liners into place.. The solder works well but is more trouble. I have also heard of those turning them tight and TIG welding the liner into place. This eliminates the tell tale ring at muzzle and chamber end.. Plug the bore to avoid spatter and relieve the bored hole to provide place for weld material..

gunnut69,
Thank you for a very informative answer!
Have a MIG welder but no TIG.
May try welding it as I think that is a very good idea.
If it doesn't work, I'll know before very much time and effort has been expended.
I think making a large chamber ring on rear and the welding muzzle would keep things together.
Now to se if I can find my barrel blanks!
Thanks again.

I don't know but would bet a really good welder with the MIG could install such a barrel.. I have seen 1911 barrels where the barrel was bored from the reenforce(think locking lugs, legs etc.) and a new one soldered into place. These composite barrels were used by a manufacturer. The barrel reenforce acted like a monoblock in a double shotgun.. It does require shaping the front of the replacement barrel to function as a 1911 barrel but gives the most material for the chamber. Brownells sells blanks for pistols from several makers.. I would avoid having to replace the hood, simply boring the barrels from the front and turning the replacement to fit.

I have done some conversions:
1) Made a 38 sp insert for a 45/70 Handi Rifle
2) Converted 8mm mausers to 243, 257RAI, 223, 308, 7x57mm, 45acp, 30 Mauser, 300 Win Mag
3) Converted Tokarev pistol from 9x19 to 9x23
4) Converted Star Super B from 9x19 to 9x23
5) Converted 308 Mauser barrel to Tokarev pistol barrel in 7.62x25mm
6) Made 12 gauge insert to shoot 22 long rifle rimfire
7) Converted handi rifle 12 ga barrel to take Rem chokes
8) Converted two VZ24 actions into one short 6mmBR action and one long 338 Lapua action
9) Converted 91/30 Mosin Nagant to 45/70
10) Converted Win 94 30-30 barrel to screw in 91/30 action with a bushing
11) Converted injection moulded Ramline Sav110 stock to Alluminum V block bedding
12) Converted Arisaka 99 300 Savage to 308 Win.
13) Converted Ruger 10/22 match chamber to Stinger chamber
14) Converted Springfield 30-06 barrel to 7.62x54R on 91/30 action
15) Converted old 12 ga barrels into Rem Choke extenders
16) Others

I have a 1911 barrel here that was relined from 45acp to 7.62x25mm by the Chinese.
Workmanship was not too good.

Normally when I do a liner I'll thread it over the chamber and go for a slip fit the reat of the way. Then use our Pro Bed epoxy on the bore and the outside of the liner. I leave the sleeve long so I can get a wrench on it, and screw it in tight. After the epoxy has set up, I face off the front and rear and proceed with crowning and chamber work. I never have tried a 45 barrel though, I would think holding it would get interesting since there aren't many parallel surfaces on it. You may need to get creative with your fixturing to hold it straight.
