Velocity; Handi 45-70 vs. BC
« on: December 26, 2006, 01:24:28 PM »
I'm sure this subject has been covered (in depth), I can't do a search and the FAQ's don't really address this question. I've read Chuck Hawks tables and understand them.
Is the BC barrel long enough to actually have a negative effect?
I've got a Handi 45-70, a BC and a friend with a chronograph, however the weather hasn't been cooperating (very cold and windy).
Just wondered if anybody else has checked the actual difference ?
Thanks,

Dunno about a negative affect, but it can have a very positive affect with the right powder and bullet combo!! Read my range report below. ;)

Shooting an h4198 load with 300gr Nosler PPs, I get 2425fps in a 22" Handi and 2450fps in the BC, so obviously h4198 is not a good choice with that weight bullet for the 32" barrel.

Thanks Tim, that's what I was looking for. I too use H4198 (47gr) with a 350gr Hornady JFN. The 350gr loads are consistant with the charts. I wonder if you're getting the negative effect with the 300gr bullets; ie. once the powder is burned, friction from the extra barrel length actually slows the bullet. Ponderous, really ponderous :-\

Think I'll pick up a can of VARGET next time I get to town, might just be the thing for the BC.

Haven't tried Varget in the .45-70s yet, but Benchmark sure works good with 300gr bullets in my .405 Winchester Target with the 28" barrel! ;)

The VARGET intrigued me because it's a slow burning powder and may utilize the potential of the long barrel. I don't have any burn rate data for BENCHMARK. From the placement in the load data I assume it's just slightly slower than H4198.

Looks like Benchmark is about half way tween H4198 and Varget. Might have ta give that a try too!!

Thanks Tim, the more I think about it, I REALLY like the H4198 for the Handi, but I think I need to customize a load for the BC  ;)

Thanks again, Dave
