Anyone here have a .500WE?
« on: December 26, 2006, 11:45:38 AM »
For that matter, has anyone here even shot one yet?

I'm interested in feedback regarding what loads people have tried so far, how they performed, etc.

It looks like an interesting caliber, and the subsonic loads are especially intriguing to me. 600fps? I'm gonna guess those shoot a little low.  ;D

So has anyone here sprung for one of these yet?

Yes. John Taffin and I took delivery of the first guns to leave the factory. He and I both had .50AE's retro-fitted with .500WE cylinders, and John also bought another short barrel .500WE at the same time. All were shipped in late September of 2005. A couple weeks later, I took the first head of big game taken with the cartridge, a North Carolina wild boar. If you're an HHI member, my first article on the cartridge, loads, and the hunt are in the December 2005 issue of The Sixgunner. John's first article on the cartridge can be found in the April 2006 issue of Guns magazine. I have found the cartridge to be quite accurate in the FA revolver, and obviously it is adequately powerful for most any need. It is in the same category of power as the .500 (really .510) and .475 Linebaughs, and the .500JRH.

I'll bet that porker didn't have a clue as to what hit him.  Probably thought it was a battle tank!  We're talking about a gun that'll take down hippo, rhino, and Cape Buff, pigs ought to be a sure thing.

I shot it in Raton last summer.  Grizzley ammunition was used with 2 different loads. The mid range load was quite pleasant. A big push but no bite. The full on load was savage. Took all my concentration not to flinch.

What does a mid-range load consist of in this gun?  I'm think'n maybe a 450 gr. bullet at 900 fps?

I like to run a 350 Magnum XTP @ 1330 for an everyday load. This also shoots to the same POI as my .50AE load, without sight adjustments. For cast bullets, I've used 370,400 and 440 gr. around 1000 fps or so. With a 6" barrel, you can run a 440 about 1300 or a bit more.
