7mm tcu for hogs
« on: December 22, 2006, 03:01:51 PM »
Never been hog hunting before but it's something I want to do before I die.(not soon I hope!!)
There are some feral hogs near here and am wondering if a 7mm tcu is enough gun? I have a 270
or a 3006 .But rather use the thompson handgun. Any comments or advice welcome.

Thanks

I have never have shot a head of game with the 7 TCU, I have used it in heavy handgun silhouette, and it would knock down the rams at 200 meters with pretty good authority.  I reloaded it with 139 gr. Hornady's.  I believe it would do quite well on hogs, as long as you keep your shots from the shoulder forward.  Don't do like I did once and shoot one too far back.  I center punched one with a 30/06 in the deep south Tex. brush from about 150 yds. and I had one heck of a tracking job.  The hog ran about 100 plus yards and I was glad to find it dead.  Go for it and let us know.

I've shot two or three deer with the 7 TCU using Sierra's now discontinued 130 SSP and with the Nosler 120 BT. It worked fine on all of them. But hogs can be big and much tougher than the small does I shot with it. For sure it wouldn't be my first choice for hogs but it can work. I have used the 7-30 Waters on hogs and it did fine but that was a meat hog hunt not a trophy hog hunt.

I'd say if your hogs are gonna be in the 125 pounds or less size range it should do just fine. If they are bigger then for sure bullet placement must be in the head/neck not in the shoulder area for darn sure. For more info on bullet placement check out the info Kevin has on www.texasboars.com as I recall he has some really good photos showing proper placement for head/neck shots.

If  you can hit rhe hog with a 140gn or 150gn (my prefference) going over about 2200fps, you will do fine. I'm not talking about MV, I'm talking about hitting the hog at that speed. My prefference is Partitions, with InterLocks a close second. capt david

Sorry, I checked my reloading book and the 7tcu wouldn't have enough umph for me. Load either 150gns in your 270 or 165gns in your '06. Eitherone with a moderate MV of 2700-2800fps is plenty.  that will take any hog at any decent angle and range up to at least 200yds. capt david
