NEF serial no. prefixes
« on: December 27, 2006, 09:45:33 AM »
Where can I find the chart for the prefix letters/production year of H&R/NEF frames? I see some of the members use the "shotgun " {no pun] approach to finding a "fit" for  barrels they obtain. They seem to have about 4 frames, one of which is likely to fit the new barrel. How do they do the evaluating of their choice? What is the members' outlook on this, less than scientific approach? I won't bother to ask NEF! Along this same line, a member recently bought a frame not qualified for the barrel he planned on using and I saw no negative reaction from the members.

Welcome to GBO. Please read the FAQs and Help sticky in the Centerfire forum, there's a listed of serial numbers and how to read it.

The reason no one commented on it is because we know that H&R offered those high pressure calibers on frames made well before 1999, they just won't fit them to one, their policy, not ours. :-\

I think when you custom fit a barrel at home, on the proper "high pressure" SB2 receiver,, and get the specs within .001"... its not really "shotgun" work.. :P :P ;D

Thanks,Tim for the Centerfire  HELP sticky info. ds7418, was that incorrect, that finding a fit is done by trying as many frames as possible? How DO you get the specs within .001"? [ and those 4 frames I mentioned were all "proper high pressure SB2 receivers"]

If a person has lots of frames, why not try as many as it take to find the best fit rather than fittng the barrel to just any frame? Many of us have many SB2 frames, I have 25, why should I make a barrel fit a frame by changing the underlug instead of just putting it on a frame that already fits good? Barrel fitting specs and info can be found in the FAQs and Help also. ;)

In my case,, i only had this "one" sb2 to work with,, and was determined to make the 308 fit this receiver. I got the specs from this web site FAQ,, then i used my tools I already owned,, simple "feeler-gauge",,micrometers,,etc.
I shared my project on this site to help others who might have to make the same modifications on a barrel.
My other sb2 belongs to my grandson,, its a 2005 -frame in 243.,,He is 4yrs old. Wifee told me to leave his alone,, and make mine work... :'( ;D
