.450 Marlin
« on: December 29, 2006, 06:15:03 PM »

Has anyone tried the new LEVERevolution rounds from Hornady in the .450 elephant stopper. And if so, have they found ballistic data true that they put out? A gain of 8+ inches @ 200yds sounds like a lot.
And has anyone reloaded their own spitzers for their H&R .450?

Welcome aboard! The 450 Marlin isn't a real popular caliber here, most folks don't like the heavy recoil, the most likely reason it's no longer offered as a rifle, although it's still available as an accessory barrel. There have been quite a few here that have sold them due to the recoil since there's no factory offering of ammo that has less recoil as is available the 45-70 which is extremely popular here.

Yupper, most .450's are tube guns, hence the lack of O.C. spitzer ammo and they belt the stock ammo, so you don't slide one in a 45-70 and do a Yosemite Sam with the 2 tons of muzzle energy it throws out. I'll agree, it kicks like a mule, but I love the darn thing. I just threw the question out, to see if anyone has actually improved the trajectory any by reloading a spitzer. Thanks for the response Qiuck....

There are several here that load their .45-70s with spitzers, I've shot the 400gr Barnes original at well over 2100fps, but my favorite is the 300gr Nosler PP at 2425fps, it's enough to take anything that most will encounter. Big Blue shoots the discontinued 400gr X bullet, I'd love to, but it's gone forever. :'(

I believe nomosendaro has shot quite a few of these out of his...I don't think he's loaded any spitzers for it yet...

Yes, I have shot several of the LEVERelotion rounds in my 450. Until this past Nov. I had the Ultra sighted in with the 350 flat nose round. I
had killed a couple of Deer with those, so for this gun season I decided to sight in the LevR. They printed quite a bit higher at 100 yards. Both
Horn factory loads will shoot near moa at 100 yards. At that time, I knew my shots would not exceed 100 yards anyway. My Deer hunting for this gun season with this round came to a hault, Mac screwed me up by getting me to thinking about a Marlin XLR 45-70. Yea, I bought one & killed a nice 8pt with some great loads that he did for me, which was the 300 Nos. Part. at 2,425 and some change. I believe he introduced this load to others on this forum som time back. Anyway, this is a kick-butt load. I shot the Buck in the near shoulder & it exited the opposite ribcage. He was climbing the mountain toward me & at the shot, I think his rear legs folded, but this I do know.He flipped over backwards & yet again, then he was done, most impressive!!! In the 300 gr. range, this is good as it gets. Maybe Mac could post the trajectory for you, not bad for a flat point at all.

Sluggo, I may know in a month or so how they do at 200 and maybe a little further, if so I will let you know. I will find that out & then hopefully next year take one Buck with that load & then put it in the safe. I believe I would rather use the 350FP as an allround load however.

As far as recoil goes, if you compare with the std. 45-70 Trapdoor/squib stuff, yea it kicks harder. But, there are other factors when you compare
with the Handi 45-70 that is shooting hotter hunting loads. My Ultra is a Lam. stock & this one at least had a steel rod in the stock. Also, I added
a slip-on recoil pad that is great. My brother has the much lighter 45-70 Handi with the syn stocks & the same slip-on pad. If you shoot loads with
the vel. level the same for both, the 45-70 kicks ALOT more because it is lighter & the butt stock is smaller. I think the Handi buyer is more likely to be attracted to the 45-70 because of the light & heavy loads available & is much more popular in general. Someone who is looking to buy the 450 Ultra would already know that the trapdoor loads aren't offered & I don't think recoil was the primary reason for the low 450 sales for these reasons.
