Mac, loads for the 338-06?
« on: November 24, 2006, 08:43:54 PM »
I have my barrel, although it's not installed yet, just ordered the headspace guages and dies, and a box of the Nosler 180gr accubonds for start.

Looking for some of your loads, need something not in my Hodgdons manual.

Handi, you can save a lot of money on the Accubonds at their seconds shop. You have a pm, too! ;D

Handi...Mine is from either the Hogdons or Barnes or Nosler manuals...and in bullet weights of 215grains or less so far...I've had excellet results from the Noslers...and have found nothing beats BL-C2 for accuracy and velocity for the lite weights(under 215 grains)...atleast from my barrel...What weight bullets you want to load...Quick has had some good luck with the 225-250's...I just haven't got there yet...I'm having way too much fun with the 180's so far...and will be working up some 185 triple shocks as soon as I get some...If you need data from these 3...let me know ans I'll PM ya with it..

Got the PM, thanks again Quick.  Mac
I just ordered a box of 180gr Accubonds to start.  I know they worked real well for you and figured it was a good start.

Quick, I'll take a look at the link, thanks guys.

It's going to be a bit still till I get range time but will make a post when I do.

You'll like the BL-C2...I use Weatherby cases...reformed Remington 35 Whelen cases...Remington 9-1/2 primers...BL-C2 is a little temp sensitive...so watch it on hot summer days...Did you have it cut to the A-Square dimensions...or the wildvat 338-06??...

The barrel is an Adams and Bennet 338-06 A Square, built for my Savage 110, so all I have to do is get the 30-06 go/ no-go guages (on order from Midwayusa), screw the barrel in and tighten the barrel nut.  I have done this once converting my 223  into a 243.

If I do not get factory brass, I'll reform 30-06 cases to start.

Thanks for the offer Mac, but my Midway order is on its way as we write.  Part of the order is a set of go and no-go guages.

I wanted to get a set for the 223 also but funds were too tight.

Quick,
I realize the Handi doesn't have the limits of a bolt as far as length goes, but what COAL did you load the 180gr Noslers to?

Do you know what the SAAMI specs are for COAL?

Thanks.

Oh, by the way, got the barrel on the Savage today, now need to load some up and get to the range!

Will let you know how the range sesion goes.  I think I'll buy some BL C2 and load it up.

The SAAMI COL is 3.440" as listed in the Nosler 5th edition.  I've not shot any of the 180gr, smallest I've shot is 200gr CT Ballistic Silvertips loaded to 3.440". I did load some 185gr TSXs to 3.420", but haven't shot em yet.

Will be looking forward to your range report! ;)

Barnes sent me some load data on the TSX for the 338-06.  I can forward it to ya if you like.  They recommend the 210 TSX for a deer-moose load.

I personally think the Nosler Accubond should do just about as well, but will give them a try.

I read an article on an elk hunt with the 338 federal using the 185 TSX load, and at over 300yds it went completely through one shoulder and exited the other side of a bull elk.  That's pretty impressive to me!

The 338-06 ought to push it even harder than the 338 Fed.

3rd time trying to post this...

Please.....send me the data Ty sent you from Barnes as well Handi..I'd appreciate it...

I just remeasured my loads from this past hunting trip...My c.o.a.l for the 180 Accubonds is 3.448"...For the Ballistic Tips...is 3.445"...I can load them a-bit longer...but this is giving me the best over all accuracy...

Mac and Quick
Send me an email message and I'll send it to you.  This came from Tod Fowler at Barnes and the data came as an attachment.
