Here's a different question on crappie rods.
I'm looking for a 12 ft. to 14 ft, 2 or 3 piece crappie rod to set-up for trout fishing.
Some of the rivers I fish have sections where there is deep water right at the bank. I want to rig-up a long rod to use with a fly reel and fly line, but with about a 20 ft long leader and then a small, weighted nymph, and maybe with a small split shot. I would not be casting this setup - instead, I would just flip the nymph into the water, and use the long length of the rod to steer the nymph (on a taut line) around rocks, through riffles, etc.
None of the stores here (Montana) carry crappie rods. My fly rod is 9 ft long so I wuld need something at least 12 ft long to make much of a difference.
Are crappie rods strong enough to deal with bigger fish - say up to 5 pounds?
I know a lot of crappie rods are called "jigging poles" and don't have any guides. Is that correct? What kind of crappie rods come with guides? I could always wind on some guides if necessary.
I would also need a rod that has a reel seat.
Since I don't know how well this idea will work, I don't want to spend a lot of money on the rod. Maybe in the $20-$40 range.
Can anyone suggest a specific rod that might work for what I have in mind?
