What is the barrel diameter of a NEF SuperLight?
« on: December 05, 2006, 11:35:24 AM »
Can someone with a NEF SuperLight and calipers, please post for me the diameter of the narrowest point of a NEF SuperLight barrel (preferably from a .223 model, but I think they are all the same diameter, so any SuperLight should do).

Thanks in advance,

Thanks.

What 25 cal did you have it bored to?  25-06?   The reason I'm asking this question, is that I'm interested in having one bored to either 308 or 30-06 (or maybe even a 338 Federal, if it turns out to be do-able, and depending on how much the ammo costs once it shows up around here), but the gunsmith needs to know the barrel diameter before he can tell me how big he can go with the boring job.   As I haven't actually purchased such a gun yet, I don't have my own rifle to measure.

My grand daughter has a youth model superlight in 243.  The frame is currently at NEF being fitted with a 357 barrel.  But, here is what I measured from the 243 barrel.  At the biggest part of the chamber, it is 1.114, just in front of the chamber before the barrel lug, is .780.  The muzzle is .646.

Hope that helps.

Ummmm Marv, is that a typo? .963" is almost an inch, bull barrels are only ~.800" at the muzzle!! ??? Standard barrels are around .650"-.675" or so.

Ah, thank you very much!   That's sweet to hear; all I needed was at least .5 to make a 30 cal, which would be plenty in all honesty - but with that much meat, I could most likely have one bored out to a 338 caliber (probably 338 Federal, or maybe a 338-06).

So, now I have a side question of interest; can someone with a regular sized Handi barrel take the calipers to it, and see what the diameter at the muzzle is, and also what the diameter at the 20 inch mark is?

I have this wondering, that perhaps the "SuperLight" barrels are only lighter due to being shorter, and that other than the bit you save by having a shorter barrel, that perhaps NEF is making the overall gun lighter by using a lighter stock and/or hardware.

Thanks in advance,

I posted the muzzle diameters of the standard barrels as .650"-.675", they measure about .700" 2" from the muzzle and ~.920" at the forend stud. I don't have a superlight, but I do have .30-30 Topper that has a very light barrel, it's almost straight from just a head of the chamber swell to a muzzle diameter of .609", I suspect that's where the superlights loose the weight, not just being 2" shorter, but also thinner from just ahead of the chamber swell, all the way out with little taper. I have a 22mag barrel that's made the same way.

If that's the case - that forms the question in my mind; if I want a sub-6 pound handi-rifle in a more serious caliber than .243, that instead of having a SuperLight barrel bored out and rechambered, would it perhaps be cheaper for me to have (probably a stainless) Handi barrel thinned down on a lathe (and maybe nipped down to 19" or so)?

Hrmmm......

That idea sounds familiar!! ;D

Brotherjack

Wayne Yorks specialty is building lightweight rifles, 4 & 1/2 lbs with the scope on. Super light weight rifles are what he likes to build. He can lighten any action or barrel. Check his web site out and see for yourself.

swageall

An option that he may be able to do is to turn a 7-08 or .280 barrel down for ya to lighten it, then rechamber it.

Tim

You could just get the .280, not worry about spending any money on rechambering and spend a little on shortening and turning the barrel if you wanted. The .280 is more than enough for your needs, it's a great efficient cartirdge with fine factory loadings and many, many bullets available for the reloader....<><.... :)
