howdy you all
« on: December 05, 2006, 06:14:46 AM »
new fella here to the forum,I currently own a H+R ultra slugger and that is one bad rig,I am currently looking for a truck/deerstand rifle and a have narrowed my choices down to a savage 10fp with a 20in barrel in 308,a 30-30 handi rifle,or a H+R ultra in 308 or 25-06.I need the shorter barrel for ease of maneuvering around, shots will be from 75-225 yds.what do you guys think on my choices,I am leaning towards the 30-30 using leverlution ammo.
beer,check ammo,check gun,DAMMIT,I knew I forgot somethin!!

Welcome Aboard...

The 30-30 is a good caliber...and certainly shorter than any bolt gun...but so too is the full lenght 25-06 as compared to it's counter part....both would do you well from a tree stand...For longer shots...I would go for the 25-06 over the 30-30...(the longer barrels are a personal preference of mine)...and if you go with the 30-30...you can load any spitzer bullet in them...your not limited to flat points or round nose as you are with the Lever guns...As I said...both would serve you well...Even though I prefere to hunt on the ground these days...I have had both up in different stands and niether one was a problem manuvering around...and I don't have any problem with them on the ground going thru blow downs and thickets either...Take a look at them at a gun store and you'll see what I mean...The standard 270... 30-06...the new 35 Whelen...with 22" barrels are somemore good choices...as well as the 26" 280...Since you have the Ultra Slugger...take a look at the 243 Bull barrel Ultras as well...they do exceptionally well too..and can serve you well in any varmint hunting you may do....Lots of "good" choices...you just have to pick your favorite...

Now is the time to buy as well. Lots of folks @ the last show were selling their hunting rifles.
