Is this true?
« on: November 25, 2006, 01:43:31 AM »
Went to the local gun shop with my son who is looking for a shot gun. He isn't sure of a gauge so the dealer recomended a NEF, but he said buy a rifle of any caliber and you could put a shotgun barrel on the base. I thought you need a shotgun base for shotguns and vise versa? what do you think?  TVC15

Sounds correct to me... You can get a shotgun bbl. fitted to a rifle (SB-2) receiver

                                             BUT NOT

a rifle bbl. onto a shotgun (SB-1) receiver.

If you look around, you can also buy combo's with shotgun and rifle barrels, along with black powder, all in one package.

The frames are treated to diffrent pressure levels , the shotgun ones are only made to handle shotgun levels while the rifle frames will handle the much higher levels of center fire rounds as well as shotgun .

The ML barrels work on a closed breach so they will work on both frames . the only one of the newer frames that they will not fit barrels to is the .410 / .22 virsa pac combo guns .

Buy the rifle.  Choose a caliber that suits your son.  7-08 and .243 come to mind.  The one thing to remember is that the comb on the rifle stocks for scopes is higher than a shotgun.  Your option here is to buy a rifle with open sights which has the lower comb.

As has been said, you can put a shotgun barrel on a rifle frame, but not the other way around. H&R has a new 3 barrel combo coming out, in fact it should have been available a month ago, but no one has reported one yet. They already have a few 2 barrel combos available, the 3 barrel combo uses one frame for all barrels including the rimfire barrel which is a first, the Versa Pack frame has dedicated barrels, no other barrels can be fitted to it.
