Sold 300 RUM.... now looking to buy a 338 RUM
« on: November 05, 2006, 02:47:09 PM »
Well, I just closed the deal on my 300 RUM 700 Police, sold it for $950 (along with 31 rounds of remington 180 grs scirocos + Leopold VX-1 3-9X40)... I did lose out a little on the deal but oh well, I no longer believe in super fast 30 caliber bullets.  I am also in the process of trying to sell my 338 win mag only because I intend to keep just 1 type of caliber for every rifle I own.

NOW ITS TIME FOR THE NEXT RUM lol, I been doing alot of reading and noticed that the 338 RUM is probebly everything needed when it comes to North American game.  Is it true you can download the 338 Ultra to 338-06 loads & 338 win mag loads ?  Where do I find data like that ?

In regards to applications, I know for sure my brother wants to hook up an elk / moose hunting trip and have me join him... where (I suggested alaska in the next 2 years or so) but we don't know yet.  I wanted to get a "powerhouse" of a rifle and practise long range shooting with it.  I am currently learning how to reload and i'll tell you what, I never thought it would be this much fun and of course, reloading makes you get an itch for a new rifle and this is mostly why I want to get a 338 Ultra mag.

I don't want people to get me wrong here, I would be more than happy to take just my 30-06 or 7mm mag for this hunt..... but wheres the fun in that :) this is defenetly a good excuse to give the girlfriend for buying a new gun  :P

What are your thoughts of the 338 RUM ? is this one here to "stay" or will the cartridge be gone in the next 5-10 years ?  Also, which maker chambers the 338 RUM with stainless steel rifles (other than the Rem 700 of course) ?

nasem, ballisticlly speaking, you just got rid of one of the finest long-range, north-american big-game cal. there is. Not to say that there is anything wrong with 338RUM, but if you compare the two, I like the 300rum, but this IS America ain't it.

good luck,DM

You know what, I think you've made a very wise choice.  Personally, I think any Plain Jane magnum can handle most any distance logical for hunting.  I've done a lot of shooting on paper and steel beyond 200yds. with my '06 to know that a magnum is more than capable at equivalent ranges.

I was actually shocked to see that you were trying to get rid of the 338 Win Mag. too.

You know what, People tell me that alot, I do change my mind pretty fast lol.

I don't live in NC, Im from Michigan, my brother lives in raleigh NC and I go there every year to hunt.  He has a nice place in Cary about 5 minutes away from his house, about 15 acres, you can take about 1 deer every 3-4 hours on the tree stand.  I was there on the weekend of oct-22, I took out a 120 lbs doe and he took out a nice 6 pointer.

He is flying me there for thanksgiving for more deer hunting..... Caliber of choice, why the 50 BMG of course :)  JUST KIDDING.  He'll be using his 308 BAR and I'll be probebly using the '06 or... gosh I have too many guns to choose from

I have a 338 RUM. I love it. It is very versitile. I don't reload but I use a small commercial reloader who sells a lot of ammo at the local guns shows. I never have him press it (the factory stuff is hot enough for me). I have had him load mild stuff ( 200 gr load at 2600), mild 250 gr load (about 2,500 fps) up to hotter loads of 300 RNSP @ 2550 fps (matching .375 Win Mag loads but under the 2,775 potential of the 338 RUM). He always used my Lee Manual for the loads, as his loading books were older than the year 2000 introduction of the 338 RUM. They kick more than they would be in smaller cases since there is more powder (weight of power figures into recoil) and he likes to use the "slowest" powder to get the desired speed (i.e. , he likes to fill up the case).

I have the 338 and the 300 RUM. Two of the greatest rifles I ever bought.  So far I've shot a black bear with my 300 rum shooting 200gr bullets. Going to Africa in July 2007. I'll use my 338 RUM there.
