I was very careful about scent control, for the muzzleloader opener on Saturday. I was hunting on public land, and since there were no wheels allowed (hooray), I was 1.5 miles in and to myself. I heard the buck approach in the frost. At 75 yards, and behind me he obviously busted me, coming to full alert. My only shot was a neck deal, and it was fading fast. I centered my Huntsman barreled sb2 frame on the white patch, and made the shot. The deer was fileted and into backpack, including heart and liver by 7:45... A nice gift for my 60th.
My load is 295 Powerbelt 90gr loose 777 (the Huntsman's breech plug is designed for loose powder), and a new Winchester 777 primer. I was wrong in the past to claim primers don't make a difference. My Huntsman has always been inherently accurate for deer, but the 777 Winchester primers have added a new dimension towards tightening groups. "My" hypothesis, Regular 209 primers when ignited push an easy loading Powerbelt and powder slightly forward before full ignition, thus creating a crud ring as well as impacting accuracy. Matching the powder with ignition source makes sense. Whether I am on to something or not, of my numerous muzzleloaders my Huntsman is the most accurate, and the easiest to use... (Forget the goofy breech plug tool)!
