Huntsman accuracy
« on: October 25, 2006, 07:06:05 AM »
I bought a huntsman a couple of years ago. I didn't get to hunt the first year due to a major heart tune up.
I killed a nice ten pointer last fall but wasn't pleased with the performance it took three shots to do the job.Partly my fault I have trouble seeing iron sights, but still took to many shots. The best accuracy with sabots was 5' groups. I finally tried power belts and was amazed.Three shot groups at at 50 yds clover leafed and at 100 it grouped 2.5" I'm a happy man.

I put a red dot scope on mine

I shoot 100 grain pyrodex

I am not the best shot in the world but I get around 1in @ 50

Just got one this year and with a scope can do coverleafs at 100 YDS using Hornady Sabots and 90 grains of ffg. Try cutting back on the powder a little.

Sounds like you found a good load for your huntsman. You should have  better results this year. What sabots did yours not like ?

Hornady and tradition  240 grain  with 80 grains of pyrodex. The powerbelts 295 grains with 95 grains of american pioneer ffg. They load easily and clean up very easy. I like that.

How about PowerBelts with Pyrodex pellets.  I like the ease of the pellets and if I use 2 it's 100 gr.  I would be interested in if anyone uses the same and thier results.

295 Powerbelts shooting very well for me, too.  I'm using 100 grains Triple Se7en.

I'd rather use the T/C maxi-hunter because I've heard some negative reports about Powerbelts fragmenting and not penetrating on game.  But, they're the only thing shooting accurately for me right now.

Does anyone see much difference between Pyrodex & 777?

In what terms?  Accuracy? Velocity?

I used Pyrodex in the past and the only difference I notice is that Triple Se7en is far easier to clean up than Pyrodex.  I think Triple Se7en is supposed to give more velocity for an equal volume of BP or other black powder substitutes.

I use the 470 gr Maxi-Hunters, they shoot awsome with a 100 gr charge of Goex FFG, but they smack ya around a little ;D They hammer Deer, double shoulder shots knock them right off their feet. Only problem is they are discontinued, so I will probably use the 370 gr ones and give them a try or go custom from another company. Jack.

Sighted in today and got just a bit over 2" at 100 yards using PowerBelts and 2 Pyrodex pellets.  My buddy had a new Knight and could not get the same accuracy.  I think the Huntsman is a heck of a bargain.

Took my Huntsman out today to line up the scope with different powder.  Last year I used BM3.  It shoots really good  but it's so fine some of it was coming through the ignition hole in the breech plug.  This year I am trying American Pioneer in FFFG.  I use T/C Cheap Shots and .25 ACP primers.  80 grains of the AP was really bad, all over the place.  85 grains of AP almost clover leafed at 50 yards so I stopped right there.  Didn't check at 100 yards cause all my shots are under 75 yards.  The Cheap Shots load really easy  and do really good on deer.  The AP powder cleaned up well.  My Huntsman is the older model with the 24" barrel but boy does it shoot well.

I was very careful about scent control, for the muzzleloader opener on Saturday. I was hunting on public land, and since there were no wheels allowed (hooray), I was 1.5 miles in and to myself. I heard the buck approach in the frost. At 75 yards, and behind me he obviously busted me, coming to full alert. My only shot was a neck deal, and it was fading fast. I centered my Huntsman barreled sb2 frame on the white patch, and made the shot. The deer was fileted and into backpack, including heart and liver by 7:45... A nice gift for my 60th.
My load is 295 Powerbelt 90gr loose 777 (the Huntsman's breech plug is designed for loose powder), and a new Winchester 777 primer. I was wrong in the past to claim primers don't make a difference. My Huntsman has always been inherently accurate for deer, but the 777 Winchester primers have added a new dimension towards tightening groups. "My" hypothesis, Regular 209 primers when ignited push an easy loading Powerbelt and powder slightly forward before full ignition, thus creating a crud ring as well as impacting accuracy. Matching the powder with ignition source makes sense. Whether I am on to something or not, of my numerous muzzleloaders my Huntsman is the most accurate, and the easiest to use... (Forget the goofy breech plug tool)!

At 75 yards on Sunday I had 2 three shot groups touching using 300 grain Hornady SST, 100 grains 777, using Premier Rifle 25 ACP conversion breech plug.  I am sold on the 25 acp breech plug.  Just bought one for my Encore.
