50 grain Remington PSP's in the .223
« on: October 30, 2006, 06:24:16 AM »
Been out playing with my relatively new synthetic stocked Handi in .223 lately. First day out it didn't seem to want to group, but afout a couple of hundred rounds and some bore cleaning it's really stating to come around.

The first loads I fired through it were some commercial reloads (Ultramax) which featured a 55 grain JSP. I bought a 1000 round case of the stuff and didn't really expect too much in the accuracy department from it because of it's mix/match of both commercial and military brass,... but this stuff shoots! In fact, I'm having a devil of a time coming up with something to outshoot it.

My first load was 23 grains of H322 and the Remington 50 grain PSP,... commercial cases and CCI BR primers, 2.215 OAL. This charge of H322 is pretty well known among those who shoot the .223 and it's always given me good accuracy with the typical 55 grainers, but it won't shoot these 50's without throwing flyers.

I've got another batch put together with 25 grains of H4895 but I haven't been back to the range to try them out yet.

Anybody else out there shooting the 50 grainers in their Handi's?

Just a note on the flyers, you need to follow thru completely to the rear with trigger pull, the transfer bar safetly will cause inconsistent firing pin strikes if you don't, which will lead to inconsistent ignition and accuracy. ;) Also, the rear rest should be positioned under the hinge consistently in the same spot, or accuracy will suffer. Bedding the forend can eliminate this issue.

The 50 grain PSP shoots good in mine with 25.5 grains of BL-C2 ... a medium load. Mine didn't shoot the 55 grains well until I got several hundred rounds though it. Now the 55 grain PSP with the same 25.5 grains BL-C2 is my most accurate load ... so far. I've worked some loads with H322 but not enough to find the sweet spot. I either use Hornady or Remington PSP bullets. Also have H4895 but haven't tried it in the 223. IMR 3031 25 grains also gave me good results with the 50 grain bullet.

My best 50gr load so far is
 Hornady 50gr v max
 winchester case
 remington 7 1/2
 24.5grs IMR 3031

Half inch all the time

I'll back off 1/2 a grain and try that. 25 grains is about an inch group.
