Remington Model 7 (what caliber?)

Thinking about a stainless/synthetic model 7 for central Texas hill country deer (110lb).  Caliber choices are 243, 260, 7mm-08, and 308.  My initial investigation shows people are using the 7mm-08 alot for this type of hunting.  I don't know much about this cartridge.  Anybody have any thoughts/recommendations?

From the 47th edition Lymans Manual:  This cartridge was designed to fill a need for silhouette shooters.  It is a necked down .308 and has the advantage of less recoil as compared to its parent round.  The 7mm-08 ranks right near the top among deer hunting cartridges.  It has flat trajectory and great accuracy.  It is somewhat handicapped with the heavier bullets due to the short magazine used in rifles chambered for this round.

Blewis:  I am one of the people who have switched over to the model 7 in 7-08 and love it for the deer in central arkansas which are probably in the same size weight wise as the deer in your area,  I have found the caliber to be extreamly accurate and the handling of the rifle in its size fits my style of hunting, I am not a big fan of overly large rifles anymore,  I used the rem. 120gr. hp last yr 2001 season to drop 2 deer in their tracks at aprox. 140yds both neck shots and was completely satisfied, went to the 139gr. this year and was as well satisfied, personally if I was going to keep a rifle in the truck on the farm during deer/coyote season it would be the model 7 with the 120gr. hp for me, hope that has been of some asistance and good luck in your decision. :D   JIM

I would also suggest the 7-08.  For Texas whitetails the Model 7 and 7-08 would be an awesome combo!

My son has a 7m-08 Rem mountain rifle in stainless/laminated.  Really a nice little gun.  Shoots to beat the band and with 140 gn. bullet it can really do the trick.  Could be one of the best kept secrets around for an excellent deer rifle.

Go with the 7mm-08. That's what I,m trying to talk my son into. If I already didn't own a 308 I'd get one. Hmmm... Anyhow, the model seven is a good rifle. I have one that I bought back in the mid eighties in 223 with the 18.5 barrel. Will shoot dime sized groups all day.

If gun shops could offer test shots before you buy... like test driving a car. It's more than just looks. Go with your feelings on what feels best.

I have the .243, .260, 7mm-08, and the .308.

There was an article in some magazine some time ago that discussed the .260, 7-08, and .308 as the perfect whitetail cartridge.  The 7-08 was the author's pick, and it's mine too.

For deer (especially in Texas where I am originally from) the deer are generally small.  As such, even the .260 would work just fine.  My .260 is very accurate and has low recoil, I guess just like the 7-08 and .308.  Anyway, I would pick the 7mm-08.  I shoot Hornady 139 grain Light Magnum bullets and it hits deer and drops them quick.

Thanks for the feedback!  I was 90% sure I would get the 7mm-08.  After everyones reply I am convinced that is the right choice.  Thanks for everyones input.  I do enjoy reading the different replies on various topics.  You get a real good sense of what really works out there.

I hate being the odd man out, But!

One of my shooting/reloading partners had a Mod 7 in a 7mm/-08 and the short barrel gave too much muzzel blast. He never could get it to print much under an inch. He had too much flinch from the muzzel blast. He traded it for a Win Frather wight 243 and has been a happy camper ever since. I would advise anyone to find a friend with a mod 7 in a 7mm/08  and try it out. That is my two cents worth. OO :wink:
