Lead Free Slugs ?
« on: May 02, 2007, 01:10:05 PM »
One of my favorite hog hunting areas is going to mandate lead free slug use.  I currently use the Winchester Platinum tip with good results.  I want to test several brands to see what shoots best.  I use a fully rifle barrel and want to use sabot. I know of the Remington Copper solid.  What other manufacturers make a lead free sabot slug?

I am not positive, but I think Federal has a sabot with an all copper Barnes expander bullet.

Yes Federal makes slugs that use all copper Barnes bullets - and they work quite well too.  Federal still makes one of the old style (slow, kind of hour glass shape) all copper slugs also.

I believe the hourglass shaped one is lead coated with a copper wash.  Federal makes 2 weights in the Barnes, one at about 1500 fps and one at 1900fps.
Brenneke makes the Super Sabot, which I believe is lead free.

Copper Solids seem to work really good for me, though, out of my Mossberg 695.  I bought a bunch on sale for $6 a box a month ago.  About 2" groups at 100.  I have two I dug out of my dirt backstop sitting on my desk that look like they should be out of the ammo catalog, they expanded perfectly.  Remington is coming out with a low recoil version at 1200 fps later this year.

I think Hevishot makes a lead free slug as well.

Can't think of any others, but try looking at midway and looking at 12 gauge 2 3/4" slugs and see all the options.

Good luck.

I believe Heavy shot makes lead free slugs. I am sure they make a foster type and they may also make a sabot type too. I know Midway handles them.
