Hard Time Seeing Brass Sight
« on: October 18, 2006, 04:34:53 AM »
I have a hard time seeing my front brass sight when I'm hunting around dusk or dawn.  I was just wondering if anybody painted their sights or should I replace them?  Is there a color combination where I could paint the front sight one color and the rear sight another to help me see better?  I would like to keep the sights as "traditional" as I can, but I would still like to see.  I have a Traditions .54 Cal Deer Hunter.

I painted the front bead on my Winchester with a dab of flourescent orange paint and it helped some, but keeps flaking off.  I switched to a fiber optic front and can see it a lot better, but don't think it's any better to shoot with.

I've had the same problem, firesights worked for me, but before they were around, I used a glow-in-the-dark paint, there is now actual gunsight paint.

Alot of oldtimers swore by a silver front sight in the woods. You do have to polish the things regularly, though.
P.S. In many states, if you can't see your front sight, you are already past legal shooting hours. (actual sunset, rather than dusk).

If you decide on fire sights, try and find a set with a green front. The red seems a bit fuzzy to my old eyes.  ;)
