reloading the 45/70
« on: October 17, 2006, 10:48:17 AM »
I bought a box of buffalo bore item# 8a there 430 LBT bullet and noticed that lthey look like small rifle primers. I send them an e-mail and they told me to use small rifle primers when reloading and depending on powder use i could use standard or magnum. Can someone tell me why this brass was made to handle small rifle primers , whats the benifit? I have only reloaded brass made to take the large rifle primers and was wondering weather to reload them or not.

I have always used large rifle primers. If they can provide you with some load data reload them.

Tim Sundles of Buffalo Bore worked with Starline to produce the Buffalo Bore 45-70 Magnum brass that has a doubly recessed, small rifle primer pocket to essentially eliminate the possibility of tube magazine detonation.  The primer that should be used in that brass is the military-spec from CCI, CCI No. 41 primers.  These also contribute to reducing the possibility of tube magazine detonation as they are designed to eliminate "slam-fires" in military automatic rifles.

So, you want to use CCI No. 41 primers in that Buffalo Bore 45-70 Magnum brass.
