Not much talk about them. I am interested in a different deer caliber than my usual 30/06 and wonder if the 280 Rem barrels are good shooters or not? I like the 26" barrel

Welcome to GBO!! Yes, they are. I bought a barrel from Mac that performed very well for him. I will be testing soon with BT & Acc. &
will post results. Because it is a good round coupled with the 26", it is a fine choice, I would advise you to get one.

Evidently you did not do a search of the .280 Rem on this forum. It has been talked about a lot in the past.  There are many here who own and love their .280s myself included. Judging by the post I've read it tends to be one the most accurate Handi calibers out of the box.  They also all seem to shoot the relatively inexpensive 140 gr. Remington Core-Lokt very well.  Choices in 7mm bullets for the reloader are plentiful and the .280 Rem can be loaded to near 7mm Magnum velocities. With the right bullet and load combination the .280 Rem is capable of taking anything that walks on this continent.  The .280 shoots nearly as flat as the .270 and IMHO packs a bigger wallop when it arrives at the target.

The 150 gr. Corelokts chrono 2975fps through my 26" 280,and thats faster than the 30 06. The 140's will do over 3000fps.  Digger

I've chrono'd Federal HE 140gr factory loads around 3100fps out of my 26" Handi, and Hornady 139gr LM's are close to the same velocity.  Accuracy has been around 1.5" with factor loads, and even better with hand loads.
