Minnkota unstores at speed
« on: August 13, 2006, 05:28:41 AM »
Had some trouble a couple weeks ago. While fishin the Mississippi, traveling downstream, at 30-35 mph, hitting some large wakes created by large yachts, my bow mount Minnkota auto pilot unstores and drops into the water. An alarming sight to say the least. Apparently the rough ride bounces it out of the cradle area of the base. This has never happened before. No obvious damage except for the fact the auto pilot no longer functions. Maybe this rough ride was more extreme than the boat and motor has experienced before. This happened twice that day. Is there some thing wrong with my bow mount or do I need to slow down? Has this happened to any one else? Thank you in advance for any advice.

Bad stroke of luck!

I haven't kept up with boat stuff for quite some time but someone used to market a velcro and 2" wide nylon strap device to secure electric motors to their mounts to avoid what you experienced.  Maybe they still do?
