Gov't Model re-finishing

My trusty old Series 70 Colt Gov't Model which I carried for a number of years and have lavished with all kinds of tweaks and expensive parts finish is now as much touch up cold blue as original, I alwas though I'd
prefer either Parkerizing or bead blasted blue, but I recently saw an
ad for K-kote which you bake on in the oven and is supposed to be considerably more durable than any traditional finish anyone have any experience with this stuff ?

Hay fredj:  There was something posted just recently about the finishes like that.  I think someone said that you can chip them but I'm not sure it was in relation to that partiuclar product, K-Coat, or if it was something else.  

I dunno buddy, I think that if I was going to have my 45 refinished I might choose a black chrome or a nickled finish for durability.  The chrome should last almost as long as the nickle, which lasts forever.

What about powder coating?  I have no idea how it would work on a firearm, but it's nearly indistructable on car parts.  They spray colored powder onto the electricly charged part, then bake it on.

Shane:  you know, I would have to research that some more.  I have seen articles written on the powder coatings but do not know how well they hold up to use and holster wear.  With the powder coatings I will assume you can use colors.  Having said that, I have seen handguns finished in powder blue, light blue, pink, red, and green.  The finishes look durable but I don't know if the colored finishes are an entirely different animal from the powder finishes or just some of them.  Haven't heard anything bad about them though, either.  Hope this helps.  Mikey.

Look at some European guns, the EAA Witness, the Russian SKS, and many others are painted, and probably it's a powder-coat.

Flint:  thanks - that's exactly what I was thinking.  I also saw some at a gun shop recently.  New revolvers in a nice light metallic blue - looked pretty good, actually.  My late wife would have loved one in those colors.  Got a friend with a pink Beretta.  I would normally have chuckled at it but when I caught up to her and her husband on the range she was already a quarter of the way through a case of ammo and just shootin' em up.  I wasn't gonna laugh at that Lady, no sir.  Nope.  Not even.  Just an older Beretta in 32 auto that just kept on chuckin' em out and she was putting them where they all needed to go.  She cleaned up the gun right there on the range after she had finished and it looked great.   Thanks again.  Mikey. :-D

I have had good luck on many guns that I have had refinished at Checkmate Custom. 352-799-5774 they are located in Florida

Dr. D:  Thanks for raising the name.  I had forgotten what it was.  I had planned on taking my older Commander there for refinishing but they were in the process of repainting the inside of the shop and had closed for the week I was there.  This year however, I will make my arrangements in advance, drop the piece off in person and pick it back up in person for the ride home.  I understand they do a very good job with black chrome and nickle.  Mikey.

I had a Ruger #1 refinished at "MAC'S SHOOTIN' IRON RESTORATIONS" http://www.shootiniron.com/   The price seemed right and the finish was / is very nice.  Parkerized first then baked on Moly coat.  

I'll have him do some other guns soon.

I looked into refinishing a Ruger (I know this is the 45 ACP Forum) at a local shop.  They have a local guy who bakes a Teflon finish on the gun.  I did see some of his work and it looked good.  The finish comes out in more of a gray-black rather than a factory blue.  The cost to do a Mark I was $70.00 and it would have taken about a week.  They said the finish was virtually indestructible.  Because of repairs needed on my Mark I, I sent it back to Ruger who did all of the work for free and I paid the $70.00 for a factory blue job which looks super.  Ruger replaced every part in the gun free of charge.  Anyway the Teflon finish looks really nice if you don't mind a slightly different color along with a matte finish.  I know Mikey would take it if if was free!!!!  Ship something to Mikey and don't pay the return shipping as the piece will never find its way back home!!!!  That's my man Mikey!!!!!!!!!!!
