Ballistic question
« on: October 06, 2006, 11:52:04 AM »
Howdy, I have a 22 and 7/16th's inch barrel on my weapon and am trying to figure out the approximate muzzle velocity of a Federal cartridge in a 180 grain, Barnes Triple Shock load in 300 win mag.

The stated M.V. is 2960 fps in a 24 inch barrel.

And no I don't have access to a cronograph.  :'(

Anybody have a method to estimate or anybody shot a weapon with that approximate length barrel (22 and 7/16th's) and cronographed a load that was stated to be 2960 with a 24 inch barrel?

Trying to make drop chart.

Thanks,

Conrad

Sadly the ONLY way you're gonna do that is to fire it over a chrono. Guessing just plain don't work in such matters. Each gun is a law unto itself regarding the velocity it will deliver. If you took to IDENTICAL rifles that came off the assembly line one after the other you might find 100-150 fps difference in the velocity of any given load in them.

Either just accept what Federal says or run it over a chrono if you want to KNOW.

Well, since he has no chrono, curious to know what rifle you have that has a 300 win mag and under 24".... did you get it cut or something ?

anyways, Im going to guess that every 1 inch gives you +/- 50 fps.  So, I "guess" it should be about 100-150 fps different.  Not enough for it to effect the performance of that load

Why don't you just shoot your drop chart - Say site in at 200 then shoot 100, 300 and 400?

I haven't tried to figure anything out with this equation, but I understand that this is the one to use.

Thanks for the feedback.

It's a sako finnlight.  It shot OK, so I sanded out the stock and really free floated it all the way back to thhe start of the chamber.  Now it's holding .6 inches at 100 with the federal barnes triple-x.  Tickled pink.

I found a cop buddy who has a chrono.  Have an appointment for Sunday afternoon at the police range.

By the way, E=MC squared answers all questions, except for marital relationship counselling. ;D

E=mc squared don't work of quasars, that's why they developed quantum mechanics.  ::)

Just courious how you managed to come up with a 22 7/16th barrel? Unless it was a custom barrel, I've never seen a barrel that wasn't in even inches.
