Which would you carry (BAR or BLR)?
« on: July 26, 2006, 02:46:22 PM »
Just curious.  Where I'm from you can run dogs during deer season.  Usually in thick timber and quick shots are required.  Would you take a BAR or a BLR with you and in what caliber???  My Dad carries a BLR .243 for still hunts and a BLR .284 when dogs are running.  He loves them both, in fact didn't see any need for any of his other rifles so he got rid of them.  I was able to pick up his Rem. 742 in .30-06 which was my uncles who died of cancer so it's pretty sentimental and I rarely carry it.  I carry a BAR Stalker .300 mag and for an automatic it will drive tacks much more effectively than the Rem. will.  I know the .300 is way overkill but couldn't pass it up (fully camoed in moss. oak dura-touch).  So which make and what caliber would you carry?????

Redfox, The browning blr is my all time favority rifle for any hunting. When I lived back east I carried a belgun blr in 308. Also hunted it in The land of enchantment when I lived there. Before comming to alaska I sold it and got a 375h&h bolt gun. They are just too heavy and bulky for my tastes. So I started buying blr's again. Have 6 now and am a happy man.

The BAR is a good rifle I had one in 338 for a while. If you like it it is a good one. Regards, BYron

I do not own either but have been able to shoot both, the first was a BLR .308 early one made in Belgium crappy trigger but I still managed groups under 1". The just the other day I was able to shoot a BAR in 7 mag. Now I do not like recoil much but was amazed at how little that 7 mag kicked, only shot one group but it was 3/4' 3 shot. Both guns are pretty impressive altough I prefer bolt guns I would have to give the nod to the BAR any caliber less than 7 mag must be like shooting an air rifle.

That's like asking if you'd rather have $1 million in gold or diamonds.

I have a BLR in .358 Win. and a BAR in .308 and either one makes an excellent deer rifle.  I have a personal affinity for autoloaders on drives and other hunts in the thick stuff, but my BLR is nice to carry and has thumped anything I've shot with it.  Its action is almost as fast as an auto.

BTW, I wouldn't hunt with a magnum anything. ;D

Rick, I was hoping to find you. I always appreciate your down to earth honest ansers to questions posted. I wanted to as you what kind of bases and rings you have on your Bar and Blr ? I want something as light as possible, similar to weaver but not weaver brand.
To answer the question. I have a bar lwt o6 20" bbl wood stock and of course my blr81 .358 I like them both and it would be a toss up for me as they BOTH very fast to operate. But I usually cary the .358.
Rick I never could get that Stevens 200 .243 to shoot or the new Remington 750  in o6 so I'm going t5o trade them both for a Browning A-bolt in .243. As much as I love the way the 750 feels I probably will never buy another Remington auto. I've never had trouble with one but I just can't get then to shoot decent groups consistantly. I seem to have to relearn this lesson every 3-4 years. e-mail me sometime as I would like to pick your brain about some stuff.

WIS Sharpshooter --- I found it at a mom and pop sporting good store over a year ago.  The guy said it was a short run production and not advertised to all distributors.  They were made in Belgium and it shoots like a dream.  You can sometimes find them in 7mm or 300 mag on gunbroker.com or blueridgeoutdoors.com but they are real proud of them if you know what I mean.

Country Boy:

I thought I was just being ornery! ;D

I actually couldn't tell you about rings and bases without looking.  I don't really like scopes, and the vast bulk of my hunting doesn't require magnification.

When my vision began to weaken and I could no longer use open sights, I tried scopes for several years, and found (for me) they were too slow and bothersome for my type of hunting.  I then tried red dots and found them much more in tune with the way I hunt.

When you're moving through the thick stuff - especially in wet or snowy days, scopes seem to attract dampness, leaves, pine needles, snow and ice - particularly at the objective lense.  Red dots have the advantage of being usable even when the objective lense is completely blocked (providing you shoot with both eyes open and don't expect precision at extreme ranges).  Also, the lack of magnification makes them much faster on-target for me.

Most of my shooting is in the 30 to 80 yard range so the precision of a scope isn't necessary, and even a 5 minute dot on some red dots isn't a handicap.  Most of mine, however have 1 to 3 minute dots.  I use the one minute dots on my moose rifles, just in case I get some long range shooting.

BTW, I have a Remington 750 on its way back to the factory right now for repair.

Yes, the new BARs also come in camo dura-touch and they're sweet.  I haven't got to hold one yet and probably better not if you know what I mean.  What I like about mine is that it is a Stalker which has the open sights.

Redfox...Never hunted with a BLR, I just got a new BAR carbine .308 w/synthetic stock. Hopefully I'll fill my tag with it this season. IMO, both are great guns, the BAR would probably give you faster follow-up shots if needed, but the new BLR's have a weight advantage. As for caliber, I'm partial to the .30 calibers, I think you have a broader choice of ammo. But it's a matter of preference. I'm also partial to semi-auto's and pump actions.

Countryboy, I've had at least a dozen blr's and a couple of bar's. Of course you know they use the same bases. I've tried redfield, millet, leupold and finely went to weaver for the weight saving. For me the weavers work. However I just ordered a set of Talley lightweight one piece ringsets. I believe they will be the lightest you can find. I haven't got mine yet so I can't coment on how I like them. Regards, Byron  ;D
