ok I'm hooked on Handys

Ever since I bought my 223 Iwant more handys. Now I'm working on getting one in 45/70 and one in 30/30,.My question is , have any of you loaded pointy bullits in your 30/30's and how heavy can you hand load the 30/30 and the 45/70 and still be in within safe chamber pressure .

I haven't loaded for the .30-30 yet, the Fusion 150gr just shoots too good!! You can load it to SAAMI MAP using recommended load data and safe reloading practices, that being to work up slowly, if you need more power, add a .308W or .30-06 to your list!! ;)

The .45-70 can be loaded to 1895 levergun data and then some, but most don't go into the low ruger loads due to brutal recoil.

In th pistol section of Nosler No5 there are some pointed bullet loads for the 30/30 I can't imagine they would be outside of SAMMI specifications. There are a couple of 30/30 shooters haning around they could give a better answer than me.  Plentyof 45/70 shooters too.

 Hello Flnt4ever, Welcome to the site, I see another handi-holic in the making !
 I think in the 30-30 you load just about any pointed bullets  for the Handi.
 I have only used 125 & 150 in mine workes good. Marv.

Reloading spire points in the 30-30 is a fun experience because there are no printed guides for it that I've found. However you can get a clue about OAL by looking at what is recomended for the 308 ... about 2.70 I believe. The Handi 30-30 will certainly handle more pressure than a lever action so in theory you can load them hotter however I would not go that way because the 30-30 case will not take it. It's best not to go over the max loads recomended by the powder manufacturer which is usually a little higher than what you'll find in the load books. Mine likes 150 grain spire points (Remmingtons better than Hornady) with the max recomended load of Varget and Winchester large Rifle primers. But, I don't want to spoil any of your fun. It's best to back off and start working up till you find the load that works. Other powders that have worked well for me are BL-C2, IMR 3031 and H4895. Also it's best not to trust loads you get off the internet to much. Max loads from powder manufacturers has changed (because powder has changed) so what might have been the max load in 30-30 5 years ago for IMR 3031 as example might be well over max now.

Since I haven't loaded for the .30-30 yet I hadn't checked, but some manuals show spitzer bullet data for the .30-30 in their handgun sections, the Lyman 48th, Accurate, Hornady and Nosler all do.

Thank you gentelmen for your replys. I am going to get a couple of the most up to date loading manuals I can before I do any handloading. This is a great site for information on handys,and your first hand knowledge and expierence is what makes it so.

I dont have a Handi in 30-30 but I have a bolt action Savage 340 chambered in 30-30.  I load 110 hollow points at close to 2900fps, 125 Noslers at 2700fps IIRC, and my own  cast 172gr pointed gas checked bullets at 2600fps.  I just use the date they have for flat points but start low and work my way up, ussally way up.

I like pointed bullets in my 30-30 but being a bolt action it is a whole different game, with a Handi you can set them longer which might be a good thing.

You are exactly right the loading manuals do show spitzers in 30-30 for T/C Contender. However because those loads are for a 10 inch barrel they are generally lighter than the loads in the same manuals for the 30-30 lever action. They also take into consideration handgun recoil therefore the tendancy to faster powders at lower levels and no bullets over 150 grain. But, it is a good place to get seating depth info.

The 30-30 case has a long neck so you can load the bullet long. But, unlike most Handi's, you can easily get the bullet stuck on the lands ... I've done it.

Not all of em have different data for rifle vs handgun, the Nosler 6th shows identical powders and charges for rifle and handgun in like weight bullets, with one additional powder in the handgun loads, they also show 170gr bullets in their 165/168/170gr handgun data. Hornady and Lyman data is a mix, some show same others different when comparing like bullet weights, Lyman also shows  cast bullets to 174gr, FWIW. If I were handloading for the .30-30 with spitzer bullets, the Nosler book would be the best choice of those I have, all of their handgun data is for spitzer bullets with rifle powders and charges, with the same COL, primers and brass. Their handgun test barrel length is 14", rifle 20". ;)

Hey Tim thanks for the heads up. My Nosler book is about 15 years old (which is why I don't use it) ... I'll get a new one!
