Berger bullets
« on: August 12, 2006, 06:44:32 PM »
In the past I always noticed ads for Berger Bullets touting them as a target bullet.  I enjoy watching The Best of the West and noticed they use Berger bullets on big game exclusively, and have apparently done some testing regarding penetration and expansion.  Well, I just recently saw a berger bullet ad promoting their VLD (very low drag) bullet for big game.  Anyone out there use them for hunting besides the B of W crew?

Hmmm unless they have changed the design I wonder how reliable they are at expanding? There are those who tout the .30 168Grn HP Match Sierra bullet for use on game but again expansion is not a design feature and although it does expand most of the time expansion is not reliable. Here in the UK you could find yourself is real Hot water as the law requires the use of Expanding bullets, which are further described as Bullets which are designed to expand. Match bullets are not so illegal to use.

I've never used they but hear they are being used doesn't surprise me as I use their match bullets in some of my PD rifles.

I am in the process of testing some of the .30 caliber 168 VLD's for the North American Hunting Club. To be honest, the design doesn't give me a great deal of confidence as it is a pure match/target design. I talked to the Berger people, and they assure me that it will give rather violent expansion after initial penetration. Intend to shoot a couple of antelope next month with them, if it ever cools down enough that I can get my gun and loads checked out. I will report on whaatever I or other club members come up with. If I see any problems, I will switch to another gun, as I will not do anything that may result in animals not being quickly and humanely dispatched.

The difference is Sierra does NOT condone the use of their matchkings on medium game and bigger. Berger does, take that as you will.

Lapua Scenars are also something to consider but unless somethings changed, they are more costly than even the Bergers.

Many people I talk with use the Berger VLDs on big game and swear by them. At the same time, people are taking elk at 800 yards with a SMK and they expanded as hoped.

I was considering trying the VLDs out of the .300rum on bigger game but Id feel better if I stuck with something that I *know* will work, enter accubonds/scirrocos

More than one reply has cited the high cost of Berger bullets.  I see 'em in the Cabela's catalog and they don't look that pricey, but I'm assuming the prices are for 100 bullets.  The catalog doesn't say.  How much are they?

Burger Bullets is owned by the company that makes J4 jackets, so the jackets used on the bullets touted for hunting may be drawn differently. Burger's are a cup/core bullet just like Speer, Sierra, Hornady, Corelock's, etc, and the cup/core's have worked on deer just fine for a century now. Burgers are extremly accurate but only a $1 or$2 per 100 over std. bullets
