Need 235 grain 375 H H load
« on: July 13, 2006, 06:33:42 PM »
I have a Sako carbine in 375 HH that has (I believe) 1-10 twist.  I have found that 70 grains RL15 and 270 Speer Bullets will cut clover leafs at 100 yds.  However, I cannot find a load that works with the 235 grain bullet.  Has anybody had any luck finding a good load with a 1-10 twist rifle?  I also couldn't find a load for the sierra 250 bullet - even the sierra test load didn't do well.

First off, all rifles will have their preferences of course.
But in view of your experience so far, I wonder how long a throat that rifle has.
It could be the lighter weight bullets ( which are shorter ) have to jump
a considerable distance when fired. If this is so, it might make it more
difficult to find an accurate load with lighter weight bullets.

I had a Remington Model 700 in .375 some years ago.
I found an accurate load for the 235 grain Speer bullet, but that was
a reduced load that about duplicated a .38-55.
So, that won't help much here.
I never looked for a full power load for the 235 grain bullet, always used 270 / 300 grain bullets
on hogs.

My point here is the Remington no doubt had a different throat length compared to your Sako.

I use IMR4350 powder and in my Sako 75  375 H&H I have those 250 gr bullets going 2720 fps and at 150 yds put three into less then 1/2".  Like what already said this is my rifle I don't know if your rifling and rifle is like mine.  I think my rifling is 1 in 10. Would have to do some searching to know for sure.

Have you tried H4895?  May not produce the highest velocities but can produce good accuracy.

.375 H&H Magnum
235 grain Speer seated to 3.6"
Winchester brass
Federal 215M primer
67 grains H4895 START
74 grains H4895 MAXIMUM 2895 fps from a 24" barrel

.375 H&H Magnum
250 grain Sierra seated to 3.6"
Winchester brass
Federal 215M primer
64 grains H4895 START
71.5 grains H4895 MAXIMUM 2775 fps from a 24" barrel
We learn something new everyday whether we want to or not.

CyberSniper: thks, I did make sure the 250 grain Sierra's that I tried were just off the lands but I could not get them to group - I think part of the problem was the mild Rem Mag primers that I was using.

Jro45: thks, do you know what primer that you were using?

Esoxlucius: thks, I will give that load a try on my next outing
