Little Disapointed
« on: August 07, 2006, 01:38:10 PM »
Got to shoot new 300rum  sendero  for first time today.
With fac. 180 scirocco at 50 yards only got 5/8'' groups. Didn't have time to back up any farther. Guess I was looking for the dime size I got out of the box with 7mmrum sendero at 100. This gun wil mainlly be used for elk. Have not shot a great deal at500yards. Just out of cueiousity what should a 5/8 group at 50 do at 500. Not sure if this will be sufficent. Still want to try at 100 and 200 before I pull the panic button. That 5/8'' is center to center.

Thanks, DM

There is absolutely ZERO correlation between 50 yard and 500 yard groups. For that matter you cannot predict even 100 much less 200 yard groups from shooting at 50 yards. If you want to know what it will do at those distances you must shoot it at them to find out.

You must shoot the 100 yard and 200 yard to know as GB said.
I personally use the X2 method and I'm normaly not that far off, and it lowers expectations  also.

Example my 3 or 5 shot groups at 100 yards is 3/4" center to center so I figure on a 1 1/2" group at 200 yards but like I said that doesn’t always work. Sometimes I only gain 1/4" group size but others I gain 2" so there isn’t any real science on it, other than to shoot it.

I agree 100 percent with Graybeard. There are just way to many variables in shooting ay 500 yards. You need to make time and shot them at the distance you desire. JMHO.

I got a box of the same ammo you did but wanted them to compare my reloads velocity to factory 300RUM anyway to get the full benefit of that bullet and 300RUM velocity you need to shoot at alittle longer range than 50yds.  With that bullet design you may get smaller groups at 200/300 yds and I sighted my rifle dead on at 200yds to me those Scirocco bullets are like the LVD bullets.  Well good luck.

Don't be to dissappointed yet.  You haven't shot the gun enough to break in the barrel.

Try loosening the screws and lightly bumping the stock on the ground to seat the action.  Then tighten the screws.

Make sure the scope and mounts are tight.

Did you try any other brands of ammo?

You could also clean the barrel with a little J&B.

I'd guess the rifle will shoot better over time.  It might take a couple of hundred rounds before the rifle really shoots it's best.  Don't know.

I'd say you need to shoot the rifle, and like the other posters have said, try it at different ranges.  Much to early to draw any firm conclusions.

With my 300 RUM  Rem 700 action, I got 3/4" three shot group at 200 yds, at 600 yds with one shot I got the bulls eye.
You have to shoot at different distances to see what your rifle can do.
These are handloads using H1000 powder. The 180 goes about 3225 FPS.
