Finally
« on: August 03, 2006, 12:42:30 PM »
Erie County was slow but finally came through. I applied to upgrade my pistol permit from restricted to unrestricted. I was told I 'd probrably hear something in about 2 months. Well 4 months later, I opened the mail today and there was the letter from the Pistol Permit Dept. Yes I was accepted to have an unrestricted permit. Now its go downtown pay the processing fees and have the new permit made up. Well I guess I won't complain too much after allI got it without any hassles.

what are the differences if you dont mind explaining. I am sure the unrestricted is better and gongrats. In my county everyone either gets a concealed carry or nothing at all.

My permit was restricted to "target and legal hunting". Now its an unrestricted concealed carry permit. Certain counties and their judges put restrictions on permits issued in their county. When I got mine the easiest to get was restricted and basically all I really needed, but figured why not apply for it, I've been a permit holder for 26 years. If I get it with no hassles great, if not, I didn't lose nothing.

I got my permit in 1996, it was restricted. In 2002 I got the restriction removed. Congrats str8shooter48! The worst part is we shouldn't have to go through this BS! Just wait and see if it gets worse when Eliot takes over!

Well, apparently you have Big Brother's permission to defend your own life, in the event it comes to that. Previously, you'd have to stand there and die, so I guess congratulations are in order.  :)

Thank you for the reply. I guess that everyone gets restricted at first? Actually since the new judge was elected here last November I guess that is happening here also according to new ppl who have applied.  Before that the previous judge who retired either gave you a conceal carry or nothing no half way. But he was a gun toting man himself.  I personally think there should be state wide standards so a judge with an agenda cant make all thise decisions. Plus here now it takes about 6 to 8 months to get anything. Mine took a month back in 86.

When I got my unrestricted permit in 60's I was told to write "For the protection of life & property" as the reason for applying.  At that time I don't know if there was a differenciation in permits issued.  I guess times have changed since then but shouldn't this still be the most valid reason according to our laws & constitutions?  If our constitution allows us how can we be denied if we have a clean record?

I had to put hunting and target shooting back in 1986. If you worte protection you were denied. Times have changed and the politically correct is the way to go. I mean I could buy a shotgun and protect myself and my property. But if you do not word it right they play the games with you

I applied for and was granted a full carry permit in NYS through Niagara County in September 2004...There were never any restrictions placed on the permit.

Never put down "self defense."...I put down "personal protection" as my reason.  It is the same thing but it just sounds better.  It really does not matter now as I am in law enforcement so the permit restrictions would no longer apply now anyway.

I'm thinking the gov't. is trying to intimidate people applying for a permit by making them think they have to put down "Hunting' or "Target practice" in order to get their permit.  Then when it comes through wth those very restrictions they can say "That's what they asked for".  I wonder if anyone has been so bold to challenge these liberal judges and indicated they want it for "Personal protection" or "Self defense" or "Protection of life & property".  Then they could fight it in court if denied for no good reason.  I guess that's why my forum name is "Rebal".

Went downtown and had my permit upgraded. Absolutely no hassles. Just filled out a form, paid the lady $21.00, and waited about 20 minutes and was issued my new permit. The new credit card type permit. It definitely fits in your wallet better than the folded piece of paper permits. :)

It's about time that they went to that type of permit...That folded paper didn't make it very long in many guys wallets or pockets...
