New Kimber LONG action
« on: May 25, 2006, 03:11:56 PM »
Some time ago, there was a post by a member who stated that Kimber was going to start making their rifles in long action cartridges.  As most of us know, Kimbers are well known as THE short action, LIGHTWEIGHT semi-production rifles.

However, in a recent article in Shooting Times, the front cover confirms that Kimber is in fact now producing long action cartridges.  I believe that this is a very smart move for Kimber.  Kimber rifles have excellent fit and finish, and are of very high quality.  I own one, in a .300WSM, and can certainly vouch for that.  I did have a problem with a bolt, but Kimber's customer service was just outstanding, and they repaired/replaced the bolt within about 7 days.  It doesn't get much faster than that.

My favorite $1,000 class rifles are Sako and Kimber.  I often have members ask me if they should get a Kimber or Sako.  My general answer is simple:  if you want/need a lightweight rifle,  then get the Kimber.  If you don't mind the standard, average weight rifle, then get the Sako.  Of course the fit of the rifle in your hands and shooting position is also important.  The problem is, sometimes many of our members then tell me that they want a lightweight rifle like the Kimber, but they don't want it in a short action cartridge, but rather a long action cartridge, like the good ole standby .270 Winchester and .30-06 Springfield.  As such, they generally purchase the Sako.

Now, however, given that Kimber is producing their rifles in long action cartridges, I would imagine that Kimber is going to take some of the market share from Sako.  Heck, even I look forward to purchasing a long action Kimber. :)

Do any of you similarly find an interest in purchasing a long-action Kimber?

It was a sad day when Kimber left Clackamas, Oregon! Great employer, great guns.

I would buy a long action, controlled round feed Kimber........IF stainless steel with a nice fiberglass stock (McMillan) option in a magnum caliber.

There's a large unfilled niche out there, Kimber could step in!
