Graybeard has an excellant suggestion. If each author cleaned up his own posts by doing an edit, it would speed up getting this junk out of our faces. Even if just the current page is done, the rest of them would slowly but surely move into the past.

Edit doesn't get it. How (in detail) do I kill these messages?

As a Member you can EDIT only your own posts. So you can fix only threads started by you.

As to the HOW:

1. Open the thread.
2. Find EDIT in the upper right corner of the first post of the thread.
3. Click EDIT.
4. Remove the words STOP War in Irak from the subject line.
5. Click SUBMIT.

Done. That's all there is to it.

Is there any reason to keep all these back pages alive.
A substantial deletion would make the data base more manageable.

I started at the end and found all the pages had the war removed already.

In a word YES. Lots of reasons. We'll NOT be reducing the size of database by deleting threads. There are many disadvantages and no advantages to doing that.

Matt completed the job last night that we started. As I had been saying we only needed to clean up the first page at any given forum to make it more presentable to visitors. Then Matt wrote a program to delete all the rest when he managed to get enough time in to figure out what was needed and write it.

The site has been hacked a couple of times in the last few months and GB and Matt have been trying to fix it , so MT3030 made the suggestion that we help by editing the posts that we have started th help out .

By the way Welcome to GB's , and don't take my post the wrong way . It just seemed odd for your first post .  :?

Yes there are many very good reasons to keep the old posts.
a) The "old posts" are a large part of what makes GBO an Information Resource. If we Deleted the old posts we would be deleting what many people are here for.

b) The hacker placed the same phrase on the every post and all I had to do was download the sql of the topics table in the database, write a rather simple enough search and replace program, run the program on the sql file, re-upload the sql and inject it into the database over-writing the bad data. Which only took 8 hours to do of which most of it was waiting on my program to finish the search and replace of the hackers message.

so in short no that was not nor would it ever be an option. We are also doing backups every 24 hours of the database now so in the future at most we will only loose 24 hours of posts.

I am sure at some point in the future we will be hacked again, we are a large site and our content is pro gun and pro hunting and pro war so we will get hacked again. We can not prevent it we can only make it very hard to do and limit the amount of damge done.

Also as a side note I recomend that you remove your email from your sig as this is a very good way to land on every mailing list on the net.

I had already started the update by the time you was posting your message.

Thanks Matt.
I removed my e-mail addi from the signature. Good idea.

You are right about getting all sorts of junk e-mail. We are all targets for the do-gooders.

Of course you are right about the old posts should not be deleted. I set my mouth in motion before my brain got in gear.
