Haven't seen any yet but it's sure warm enough. Those days in the 80s and low 90s we're having combined with the nights in the mid 60s tell every thing it's spring and time to come back to life.

Did you guys get that storm tonight? It thundered and lightning here and I'll bet we got an inch or more of rain. Wasn't supposed to happen today but it sure didn't. Of course we needed the rain so I'm not complaining.

Man I hate copperheads. Last summer I was going to shoot one in the yard and soon as I got close he started to chase me across the yard. Took the whole ten rounds out of my 10/22 before I got him. Those things give me the creeps :blaster:

Southwest snakes too...

Here's one of two cute little (~1' long) Mojave Green rattlers my wife, son and I saw at the California Poppy preserve last Thursday. These things are pretty toxic. Last year at this time a little girl was bitten very close to where we saw this one.

Great place for an Easter egg hunt, eh?

Yes, Snakes, spiders, scorpions, they are out in force for sure & ticks as well. I live in the edge of the Ozarks, but I worked in the Rice & Swamp country just to the East of me yesterday & the Mosquitos were dive bombing. Some had bands installed by the G&F Commission. I should have killed 10 or 12 & brought them home, but my Z71 has the short bed!  :)

Guess I will be in the minority but I don't kill snakes unless they are a direct threat to myself or others.   :(

:-) Ranger, me too, I was thinking that 30in. was the max. length on copperheads. And watch for the babies-they have bright yellow tails-but I agree with an earlier post. I don't kill a snake unless it's a threat to me or mine. Hunman55

non-poisonous snakes- i usually do not bother.unless it is a king snake, then i may catch it and bring it home(i actually caught a small 4 ft. boa in the road one summer night near some abandoned trailers, it had 3 lumps in it as it returned from a small marshy area).or  one of those obnoxious banded water snakes in which case it usually gets a boat paddle.poisonous  snakes- it depends on the circumstance.ie proximity to kids, near  houses or deep woods.except for coral snakes, i usually leave them alone because of their placid natures.

Do copperheads kill many people each year?  Esp small children?

I grew up in NW Florida and copperhead range extended south all the way to the Gulf Coast.  Once, when looking for squirrel and turkey sign, I noted how the hardwood and scrub oak leaves looked like the 'colors' a copperhead would like.

Damn if about 3 minumtes later I didn't find one literally between my boots!  I jumped sideways about 8 feet (my coach woulda been impressed   :)  ).  My .22 literally blew its head off, and a couple days later some raccoon tracks showed why the fresh meat disappeared.

Another time when attending college in Atlanta and working for a van lines, I picked up a can of charcoal fluid on a front porch.  The house was in a Atlanta suburb.  There was this really brightly colored 'worm' underneath the can, with a diamond pattern on its back.  When I poked it with a stick, man it came alive!  Of course it crushed easily under my shoe.

I spent 7 years of my life in NW Florida and one year in Georgia.  Saw coral snakes and moccasins in FL, and even a scarlet king (looks similar to a coral).  Still have NEVER EVER come across a buzz-tail "buzzing" at me, which don't bother me none.

How bad are copperhead bites?  The first one I killed was VERY PRETTY!  Shoulda skinned it.

I don't like Copperheads or Rattle Snakes.  I trout fish on the Hiwasse river here in TN and every single time I go I see a snake.  Went with a buddy one time and stepped over a Copperhead curled up sunning in a sun spot.  I jumped so high a 747 fly by me!  I've figured as long as I don't pose a threat to them they won't bother me, since they've swam within 2 feet of me, shaking like a leaf on a tree praying they don't come my way, and just kept going.  If I see them on the bank they either move on or I go somewhere else, or if they swim by me and I'm on the bank, they usually curl up in the water, go under a little bit and swim up river, but that doesn't make me like them any more.  Just because I always try to give the snake room and they appear to give me room doesn't make me like them.  Are Copperheads deadly or do they just make a person sick?  I've always been afraid of being bit by one and having to drive to the hospital 30 min away.

Now you guys know one of the major reasons I like Alaska, NO SNAKES!!!!!!!

I had a Copperhead strike at me when I was 14.  I had been plowing tobacco all morning.  As I was leaving the field at noon a Copperhead struke at me and hit the cuff on my overalls.  It's fangs got stuck in the fabric, and it started thrashing around.  How I got those overalls off, without taking off my brogans I don't remember.  But I left them, snake attatched, right there.  Jumped on the mule and rode to the barn in my underware.  Been paranoid of Copperheads ever since.
Where is old Joe when we really need him?  Alaska Independence    Calling Illegal Immigrants "Undocumented Aliens" is like calling Drug Dealers "Unlicensed Pharmacists"
What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

No ...... You don't have sliterie things in the 'great white north,' just four-legged mother critters that'll stomp on you (in your cities no less!), and big eight or nine bruins that eat you!

Snakes sound like just a nuissance in comparison.

I still chuckle about the stupidity of mr timothy treadwell and his 'maze,' till I remember two bears had to be destroyed because of him.

Not sure why you boys don't like rattlers.....makes a heck of a good snack.  Cooperheads, skin out real nice for an enlay in a knife sheath or belt....never ate a Copperhead, but willing to give it a try.  If ya really do not like rattlers, stay out of south Texas.  The Coontails come in one size....BIG.....but the eat good.

How do you prepare them? I've killed and skinned quite a few, and eaten a couple of the biger ones (Decades ago with my Dad). All we did was pan fry them with butter, onion, salt and pepper. Tasted pretty good as I recall.

I wouldn't mind making a meal out of another just so my wife and son can have the experience.

Got any good recipes (No Sushi-Snakie please)?
