Happy Easter, Goin' Huntin'! - RESULTS PIC!!
« on: April 11, 2006, 08:46:11 AM »
Hey all :D   Taking off tomorrow morning for the Black Hills South Dakota to go turkey hunting with my family.  Here's where I'll be:

http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=hill+city,+sd&ll=44.105338,-103.741665&spn=0.058057,0.171661&t=h

We get to use rifle in SD so I'm taking my 44 mag handi for fun, just being sure not to center punch him.  Also taking my 10 guage and 17 rem.

Later!

Leaving in 2 hours!       Took the 44 mag and the 17 rem out last night for some sighting in.  I had shot the 44 before and at 50 yards it shoots better than I can and is really fun.  Shot the 17 about 10 times and the group was about golf-ball sized, I was disappointed.  Got home and put the Hornet barrel back on and packed it up.....  Maybe I have enough varmint calibers and should get rid of the 17 and get me a whelen.....  Later guys!!

Results!  Here's a pic:

Stepped off 201 approximate yards with the 44 mag and some stout reloads.  Hit right where I was aiming, almost felt like cheating.....

Nice shot! But IMHO, you are cheating, if you use a centerfire rifle. Not trying to step on toes, just my opinion. 95% of the fun for me is calling those warry gobblers within 30 or 40 yards. Not to hard to fool one at 200 yards, it then becomes target practice, rather than hunting.

In turkey if it is legal, it ain't cheating, just put the meat in the freezer.
 good shooting. Marv.

cpj...There are different methods of hunting all over the country...and while calling the birds into to you may seem to be the best way of doing it..it isn't always for everyone else..I have a question for you if you don't mind...do you rattle and grunt every buck within the same yardage before pulling the trigger on them????? There really isn't much difference in hunting styles between you if you stop and think about it...both need to practice with the weapons..both need to pattern them to optomize the load..both need to site them in to be accurate..many folks use riflescopes...red-dots sites...fiber-optic sites..peep-sites..to shoot their shotguns with as well as their rifles...both scout to find the bird...and most likely both call to the bird to get them to come in...only the range has increased...not the wariness of the Tom...cause they can bust you just as easy from 200 yards...as they can from 20....On the few times I've spring turkey hunted....I wished I could have used a rifle on a couple of them...usually by the 4th day of spring season..the birds are so jettery and spook so easy...your lucky to even see a mature Tom around...

Mac, Im not taking away from his shot, its just my opinion. And no they can not bust you as easy form 200 yards as they can from 20. And if a bird hangs up on you at say 100 yards, with a rifle, you are still gonna make the shot. Not gonna happen with a scatter gun. It is frustrating to not get a bird, but I wouldnt hunt turkeys with a rifle just to say I got one.Besides, getting to shoot whatever critter that I am after, is just icing on the cake for me. I enjoy the hunt more than the kill. Cause a bad day hunting beats the best day at work.

As far as the deer hunting goes, since most of my hunting is with my bow, yes, I wait for the deer to be inside of 30 yards, 40 if there is a WIDE open shot. I do gun hunt still, but mostly for the camping and hanging out with my hunting buddies.  Shooting a  whitetail at 300 yards with a big magnum doesnt appeal to me. Of course the location that you are hunting plays into this as well. Around here, most shots are made well within 100 yards or less. Unless you are after old hat rack, there is not much challenge in killing a deer with a gun. Same goes for killing a turkey at 200 yards.(other than exceptional marksmanship

 :agree: )

BTW, I knew that I would ruffle some feathers (pun intended)

Matt:
Congrats on a great shot and hunt. I use ONLY rifle or pistol for turkey. Maybe the individuals that have not hunted turkey in this country of little brush should try if before being critical of our hunting methods.

Doesn't this tread remind you of a similiar one about two years ago when this topic was covered so deep?

Well for one thing, its illegal in Missouri. If its legal in your state, fine with me.  But I stand by the statement that shooting a turkey at 200 yards with a rifle is nothing more than great marksmanship.  And a shot that I myself would have to practice alot.

Sorry your state is so restrictive. I'm sure the local fish & game know what they are doing. Also glad to hear you are aware of your limitations. Each hunter should be.

Wally..

It is a bite not being able to use a rifle here..but..I would if I could..

Sorry bro...they can..Turkeys have some of the best eyes of any bird..better than any hawk or eagle...and I've had them do just this from across the fields from this distance on some of the conservation ground in the middle of the state...those birds would spook at the slightest movement...near or far after being in a "WAR Zone"...As to ruffling a few feathers..none really here..it's just that with all the various laws and restrictions and lack of restrictions makes for a real melting pot of ideas around here..so...do you use open sites, illuminated red-dot sites, or regular scopes for your turkey gun,I've got a new O/U with beads I might go with this year.been .thinking about trying some of that heavy shot..

Mac, we will never agree on this, but, Id rather take my chances on a bird at 200 yards as opposed to 20.  They do see very good though. As my buddies grandpa used to say " a turkey can see a gnat blink  at 300 yards". Sometimes I think that he was correct!

I know that this arguement could go on and on, so all Im gonna say is that I would much rather have a big ole tom gobbling his fool head off 10 yards behind me,(which I have) than to see one at 200 yards.  :D

As for sights on my turkey gun, I have a truglo bead on the front only. Thought about a red dot scope, but I dont think that a 30 dollar cheapie would hold up to 3 inch magnum loads. Nor would my shoulder as I was sighting it in. :)  I could have another handi barrel for the price of a good red dot! Besides, it is my "everything" shotgun, and the red dot wouldnt work very well fro crow hunting and the like.

It should be easier no doubt..but..like I said..they can still spook real easier..

I would too..but..I would like to have the option of using a rifle as well...without anyone thinking less of me for using it... :toast:
