sporterizing a Yugo M-48A
« on: March 27, 2006, 05:51:13 AM »
Has anyone sporterized a Yugo M-48A?  I have a couple and would like to make a 8/06.  If you've sporterized one what stock, sights trigger etc. did you use?

Thanks,

Turk

Turk - whether you leave it in the original 8mm or rechamber it to an 8mm/06, the M48s are great for sporterizing.  When you mention sights - are you referencing scopes???  For inexpensive stocks you can find a Boyds stock for the M48/M48A for about $75.  For Triggers I would suggest a Bold Trigger with safety, and get a blank bolt block that replaces the Mauser safety.  I will tighten up your action considerably.

Hmmm, what else - you may have to have the bolt worked a bit for scope use.  I saw one that had been modified by cutting the bolt handle off and replacing it with a spoon handle like those on the Mannlichers - looked really custom.  HTH.  Mikey.

(I'll preface this by saying that though I do have a Yugo M48A, I haven't sporterized it.  I have however sporterized a Turk M38 Mauser as well as a Spanish La Coruna Mauser - don't worry both were well beyond collectability before I started messing with them ;)). I've also got a sporterized Swede M96, though I bought it sporterized rather than having it done myself.

Don't know if the RIA Sportsman works out better (the RIA has the military step barrel channel which you'd need unless you rebarrel), but the JRS Classic was a severe dissapointment for me.  It's sold as a Mauser stock, but without removing a LOT of wood from the stock, the cocking piece will hit the comb as it comes back.  I've got a sporterized Turk Mauser .257 Roberts with one of these and that part of the stock looks pretty much chewed up.  Overall fit was not good either.  Mine has a lot of gaps between the wood/metal where there should be none.  I'm seriously considering getting a Richards Micro-fit for it.  They look pretty good with the Rosewood tips, and I've heard that they're of better quality than the Boyds stocks.

I can definately second that recommendation for the Bold triggers though.  Excellent triggers and very resonalbly priced.

Also, there are serveral guys on the net that will forge a bolt for $35 or so.  Excellent deal as long as you find someone who will do the job right.

BTW, pics of my sporter Mausers:

I don't believe the 8-06 will fit the action.  It is too long.

I modified mine on the cheap.  I removed all the extra wood and added a recoil pad.  I removed wood from the inside of the stock to free float the barrel.

I installed a Timney trigger.  I had to remove some wood to get it to fit but I'm very happy with it.

I removed the flip up sight and ground down the base.  I then drilled, tapped, and installed a weaver base where the flip up sight was.  I used JB Weld to fill in around the base and make it very solid.  I use an EER scope.

It's a Boyds JRS Classic in Nutmeg Laminate.  The appearance is quite nice (and they're priced competitively), but overall fit and suitability to this action were not very good.  I definately wouldn't buy another, and I'm thinking of replacing the stock on that one.

HEY
i have the jrs classic on my m 48 also and you are very correct in the fact that you have to remove a lot of wood and the finished product looks ok
but only if you are at a distance  fit and finish are horrible those stocks
need some major work but i believe mine was sold for a f 54 barrel channel because when i got it boyds didn t have the jrs for the military
barrels  maybe that stock would have better fit but i don t want to spend another $75 on a $100 rifle so ill shoot it in the stock its in and spend the $75 on an iron elite scope mount and bold trigger!!

Why does everyone try to get away from the 8-MM round?  It's a great round used all over the world.   It's so close to the 30.06 that only a machine could tell the difference.  You won't find a better hog round.  Well, maybe a 6.5X55 is a mite bit better.

why? because a) it kicks like a damn mule and b) the factory loads suck because they are loaded down for older rifles and c) 170 to 220 grain bullets for deer and hogs is overkill and a waste of powder to propel that dang 5-pound projectile.

those are my reasons.

that and the 6.5x55 Swede and I have had a date with destiny for too long. I wanna try it out and this seems like the time to put a new barrel on this mauser and get the old girl up and running again.

I want to post a picture of my M48 to show what can be done with a saw and some sanding.  Will someone tell me how to post a picture?

You need to upload it to some webspace first.  If you have dedicated hosting that works well, but there are some sites out there that will host it for you (Google for "picture hosting" or "personal photo gallery" and similar terms).

Once you get a page link that has the pic, just add in the following to your post:

Replace the link text with the location of your pic, and the "Click here for picture" with whatever you want the link to say.

If you need help with getting the picture stored somewhere I could upload it to my webspace if you'd like, then you could just post a link to it (to do this I'd need you to email me the pic first).

Thank you MGMorden.

Here is my M48A.  I switch between the Holo sight and a 2 power EER scope.    I thought about buying a stock, but I couldn't see paying more for a new stock than I did for the rifle.  I cut away all the excess wood and rounded all the square edges.  I think it looks pretty good for a $109 rifle.  I'm sure you can tell I'm kind of proud of the way it turned out.
