original 30/40 craig
« on: April 01, 2006, 02:48:55 PM »
I once owned one and had to sell it, to do some remodeling! it had about a 30" barrel and was stocked to within about 2" of the end of the barrel, the INSPECTOR stamp was near the hand grip( dated legibily at 1897 with his inistials) it came out of a VFW and was only used for Funerals! Just wondering what it would be worth in todays market!

Hard to say. If you mean a rifle in excellent condition and all original military, it could be worth plenty. According to the American Rifleman, an original 1903 Springfield with all matching numbers, the proper proof marks etc. to validate that it is as originally issued could be worth $3,000. They built lots of them but only a handful remain in original, as issued condition. Many had arsenal rebuilds and are worth much less. Krag production was much lower, of course.
