Bench shooting rest recommendations.

For various & sundry reasons, I shoot from the bench.

I've never felt 'comfortable' w/ the rest that I now have.

Can anyone make a recommendation for a rock solid, adjustable, quality, etc., bench rest?

I've seen the Caldwell, but know nothing 'bout it. It looks very well made.

You didn't say what you're now using so perhaps my comments will be meaningless.  I use a Hoppes adjustable front rest, the typical kind with three feet that can be screwed up or down and the center post for elevation with a locking ring and the T shaped rest covered by a leather bag filled with sand.  I use what I believe is a Hoppes butt bag and it's the regular kind.  I believe they call it "rabbit ears".  It too is filled with sand.  I sifted the sand before I filled both bags.  I can't complain about either rest and have shot what I believe to be some pretty good groups at 500, 600 and 800 yards.  My current rifle will come very close to holding MOA out to 500.  Farther than that I believe it's the nut pulling the trigger that falls apart, not the rifle.

Right now I have old Wichita front rest w/ 2 sand filled bags. It just doesn’t seem to do what I want it to do for elevation & windage. & when I fire my 14 # Borchardt .45- 2 7/8” there is some movement.

Ray:

I just bought the Caldwell rest. the big one. I havnt tried out all the fine tuning features yet. One thing about the model I have is it does have a very large footprint. At the range I shoot at its hard to put it out as far as I would like.
That might be something to consider.

Ray, forget my rest.  It moves a little under my 40-2.5 and there is no windage adjustment.   I'm confident it would move quite a bit under a 45-2 7/8.
