« on: March 16, 2006, 07:29:23 AM »
Hey guys just wondering if anyone knows how to get a choke out that is seized in? I have a Winchester Model 120 12ga. with the win choke and i went to remove it the other day and it would not budge. Is there any way to get it out without damaging anything?

You may have to take it to a gunsmith but there are a few tricks you can try first. Just be sure you have a properly fitted wrench to work with it or you'll ruin it so the smith maynot be able to get it out.

First try some really good penetrating oil soaked into the threads. If it gets in there good enough it should come out if your wrench allows you to apply a good deal of torque. You might also try heat but don't over do it. A hair drier is safe but may not be hot enough. A paint remover gun might be better but still safe I think.

If neither allows you to take it out I'd take it to a gunsmith before ruining it.

Very good advice from Bill.  If you want to do this yourself, you need to be patient and don't rush it.  I suggest you clean the barrel good.  Then you might try buying some krol oil, or liquid wrench or other penetrant  in a quart can.  Pour off a few ounces into a seperate container and then place the barrel, choke down, in it and allow it to soak for a few days......tap the end of the barrel with a block of wood every few hours and then soak it some more.  I've heard that freezing the barrel and then heating it gives the largest amout of contraction and expansion so you might think about sticking it in the freezer for awhile before heating it.  A cold choke tube and warm barrel should provide the largest clearance between threads.
