Author Topic: Springfield /Savage mod 840 30-30 cal bolt (Read 2987 times)

Not a typo it's an 840 not a 340 -but it looks to be a newer version with a shorter barrel than the 340 I recently aquired.I believe this is a newer version of the 340 since it has a ser. # 2730XX and the receiver is drilled and tapped to fit the side mount 340 scope mount from Gun Parts . The bolt is straight and sits at about 45 degrees below horizontal when closed. Does anyone know about when this rifle was manufactured. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks Joe

The Savage 340, Stevens 325, Springfield 840 were all the same gun except for some slight differences and were made by Savage. What does the stamp on on the 840 say? From the info i have gathered (and much of it has been conflicting, varible and confusing to say the least) from different sources is that Savage moved operations from Chicopee Falls Mass to Westfield Mass in 1960. That is about all the info on its age i can tell you right now. You can try different sites to search the age by the serial number if you can find such sites. I did that for a couple of my Winchesters, but i have not found such sites that have listings for Savage Arms. If you really are dying to know the age, a member here called EVOC ONE hooked me up with a phone# for a guy that could probably tell you. I would be glad to pass that # along to you, just say the word.

Barrel stamp says "Springfield Savage mod 840" 30-30 cal. The age isn't all that important, just thought it would be nice to know. I got spoiled with the 340 I got a couple weeks ago when I got the history of it from orig. owners friend. I ordered a side mount scope base for the 340 and it would have to be drilled and tapped for it to fit and since the gun is in near perfect condition I don't want to do that. the 840 is allready set up for the scope mount so I thought I would buy it for a shooter and keep the old lady 340 as a looker. The 840 has a shorter barrel and cheaper furniture, so I think it would be better as a brush gun here in the Ga. pine thickets.I was hoping it was a 222 when I first picked it up to look at it like the one you had posted about. Going to a gun show today maybe I'll find one there. Thanks for what you did have on it.

:-) I came across a Revelation 525(Savage340) in a pawn shop recently in 30-30- this is in another post here. It's missing the mag and the stock needs some work but the bore, bolt and receiver are good although dirty. I ordered a mag and scope mt. from Gun Parts. This gun costs me $42 including tax-couldn't pass it up. I was wondering about the accuracy of these guns. The stock to action attachment is a little different and I wonder how it affects accuracy. Haven't shot mine yet-still in the cleaning stages. Any experiences? Thanks. Hunman55 :-)

Uncle Joe. There is no makers stamp on the rifle? On my 340 .222 i had to remove the Weaver side mount to see the stamp. I wonder if they didnt stamp the 325's and the 840's like they did the 340's sold under the Savage moniker?? If you would like to scope the 340, a member here MG MORDEN had posted in one of the previous 340 threads about a B-square mount for the 340's that requires no gunsmithing at all. I checked them out online and that might just be what you need to keep that rifle drill and tap free.

Hunman: I have not shot my newly aquired Savage 340 30-30 yet, but the .222 is solid, tight, reliable, easy to shoot and accurate! It is no bench gun by any means but it will do what i need it to do for a rifle that is around 50 years old. It is now my go to Coyote rifle for the more poulated
sound sensitive areas around here in NY

Also as MG MORDEN first said. You are talking about one of the first bolt actions chambered in that classic deer round. Once you get that old girl up and shooting i think you will be quite happy with it, especially considering the great deal you got on it.

Well I got the 840 30-30 today. I looked for a 340 at the gun show on sat.
and found one in 225 cal but it wasn't as nice as the 840 and was $ 75.00
more. I set the 840 up with the side mount scope mount and put a 2.5- 7
Weaver on it. Hope to get to shoot it this sat. I also bought a box of 160 gr
LEVERevolution ammo to try in it and my 336 Marlin. I'll report on them when I try them. The ballistics are supposed to be better than the flat nosed rounds.

I have a Savage 340 in 30-30. I bought the gun for $125 bucks, bought a side mount for $25, and a new mag for $25, I traded my dad a Weaver K9 for a Weaver K3. I refinished the stock and touched up the blueing. Probably the best $200 bucks I have spent.

This is acutally my only deer rifle with the sole purpose of deer hunting. I have other high power rifles that I use for deer hunting but they are multi purpose varmint/target rifles.

I loaded up some Spear 110 grain Hollow Points that are going well over 2600 FPS with groups roughly 3 inches at 100 yards. Obviously not a target gun but it will work for its purpose.

Sounds like some good deals, fellas. Hope they turn into some good shooters for you all.

Was out putzing around today looking for a .204 to add to the rack and found a Stevens 325 30-30. First one i have seen first hand and i didnt like it compared to the Savage 340's. The wood was really light colored, not walnut and it had a weird bolt on it. I didnt buy it but looked it over good and it didnt seem the same in quality as the 340's i have.

Uncle Joe what did they want for that .225 $$$$?

If I remember (past the point of no return - cronic CRS) it was $375.00 and rough. I paid $250.00 for the 840. It sounds like the 325 and 840 are closer cousins than the 340, my 840 has cheaper light colored wood and an almost straight bolt. (thinking of heating and bending for looks and function). I did set it up to be a shooter since the 340 was too nice to muck up.

The 840's that i have seen are alot nicer than the 325's that i have ran into. Hope that 840 works out good for ya.

Well, i was bad today. (wallet wise) I ditched work and used a vacation day and continued the search for a .204 at a couple shops i never been to before north of here.

I ran into a Savage 340 in .225 that was scoped and really needed some TLC. She was alittle rough but was probably a nice gun in the early days.

It looked like some one had re varnished the wood and did a crappy job. The scope was way off center and probably needed replaced. They wanted $250, but i passed and went to another place as they had no .204's.

The other place had a Stevens 325 but this one nicer than the one i saw the day before. It had the light wood but was better coloration and was a 30-30 also. It had the same small bolt as the other and was priced at $200 as i remember.

This place didnt have the .204 either, but they can get it at the best price i've found so far so i'm going to order it in a week or so.
I ended up picking up an AR .223 from the place that i'm really pleased with, so the day wasnt a total loss.

I on the other hand I showed some costraint today. Visited a pawn shop I have never left empty handed and actualy passed on a 45lc/ 410 sxs deringer for $ 135.00 but then again the week ain't over.
I did get to shoot the 840 today, It likes 170 gr better than 150's. Only shot it to 75 yards ( longest clearing at camp) but it shot around an inch at 75 so it will work. And thats with an old Weaver 2.5-7x32 scope.
I also shot a new to me Marlin 39a with a peep sight and its a keeper,
cloverleafs at 25 yds and under an inch at 40. So I had a good day too.

Sounds like a good day Uncle Joe. An inch at 75 yards will get the job done and if you keep tweaking that 840 i'm sure you could tighten it up. Never tried a Marlin, but i might have to change that! :-)

Bet ya a dollar you go back for that Deringer!?
