spring time shoot?
« on: December 15, 2005, 02:32:32 PM »
Hello,
i know i am a noby here and i am still new to this board. but i want to make a motion that we all get together this spring when we can all come and have a gathering of the guns sorta say. and have a good ol time shooting. have a party BBQ, a cannon and mortor competition and have prizes or even medals for places? i am with the N-SSA and we shoot all the time, but there are to many rules, yes safty rules should be inplace but dress and what you got bring it all.  does anyone have a place they are willing for this too? what do you say? a spring time shoot? lets work on it. make a weekend out of it. camp out or whatever?

let me know what you think

I don't think the n-ssa range is up for rent; or at least not to my knowledge. I would be game if you could get it near a Nationals weekend.Long ride from Mi.

It reminds me of an informal golf 'tournament' a friend hosted every year - named it the Cold Beer Open.

Perhaps we could get a range at Quantico?  There are, here and there, ranges that are available at some military bases for private use.  Fort Gordon is one of them.

What about an internet shoot. We could have printable targets. Print them out, Go out and shoot, come back and post your results. We could have seperate classes for diff. caliber guns. Mortars would be closest to pin or something. Later,

This is a question, not a challenge.

Is the proposed shoot supposed to be a contest or an informal get together to shoot our various artillery pieces?  It could be a mixture, not just one or the other.

George,

An informal contest is always fun.
Competition makes everyone better.

We could come up with some kind of mortar
or something for a prize.

It is fun to just go, and learn from each other.
Everyone has something to offer.

Not everyone can MAKE a mortar or cannon; but EVERYONE (who has access to one) CAN SHOOT THEM!

This is the type of event that we need - as evidenced my the interaction already posted!

It's time to build the ideas and options.  Hold off on the decision making for a bit.

It can be not only fun, but a real learning experience.  I realized, after the fact, that the can of powder in the picture I took of the golf ball mortar firing was still full of powder.  That kind of oversight was because of the distraction of firing and taking pictures.

Prizes?  Absolutely!

Categories of participation/competition?   The floor is open!

Time frame?  Spring sounds good - allow a wide window to be able to dodge the spring rain.

Hello,
i know i am a noby here and i am still new to this board....

Doesn't matter, there is no Seniority rule on this board.

As far as a cannon shoot I say go for it.

I won't be able to come!!!!  It's to far from Durban South Africa to fly up and the airlines charges to much for excess baggage to bring my cannon.

You guys gave fun without me.

hello, I am Rick, well to the one that asked what unit i am with , i am with 3rd Va. co B  Old dominion dragoons.   the range i know you can reserve, jamie west and other cannon teams go there often to practice and you know as well as me that that would be a perfict location

yes I am allowing a wide time span for planning and prep, to those that are not with the N-ssa, we can have classes, lets say
.50 cal to 1. 1. to 2. then 2. to 3. and then 3. to 8 inch or bigger

50 yard for small guns, 100 and 200 yard matches,  you can come for fun or come to win.  i am just stating that this is what we could do. if enough people want to.

and do find out about the military ranges, i know fort eustis has a artillery range but i dont know about us going to it. if you can get us on to a base that would be good, i fnot some farm or mountain, what do you guys think dont hold back.

Now this has my full attention!!! Here now is another question. Has anyone thought of contacting the National Muzzle Loader Assn.? Their site at Friendship, Indiana would be perfect for several reasons.
     1. The NMLRA holds it's championships there twice each year. Even the NRA has moved it's national match there from Camp Perry,Ohio. So there's lots of room.
     2. The town has lots of shops, restaurants and motels.
     3. They have a large camping area [both primitive and full hookup] with a camp store and shower facilities.
     4. They have done several cannon classes and they fill up very quickly as there is lots of interest by the front stuffers.
     5. It's a great central location for those in the midwest.
Could this happen? Who knows. Just more ideas to kick around. You can bet I will be there if I have anything to say about it!!!

I'd be up for it especially if it were closer west.
we've had a few cannon show up at our local rendevous.
Kind of lost track of them but could probably get one or two together. the yutz that bought my parrot has been itching to hear it roar.

Looks like a high of 40 and 30% chance of rain.  Are we still doing it?

My personal preference would be for a little warmer and dryer.
