Quick Question??
« on: February 03, 2006, 01:43:04 PM »
I just have a quick question. I recieved a gift certificate for christmas and am planning on using it for a new muzzleloader. I am a really big fan of the New England Handi's and am considering a Huntsman or a Sidekick. Since I haven't had a chance to actully look at one, can any one tell me if either one is drilled and tapped for a scope base. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Meatball,

Welcome to Graybeards!

Both the Huntsman and Sidekick are drilled and tapped for a scope base just like the Handi-Rifle. The huntsman has a SB1 frame and can accept shotgun barrels and muzzleloader barrels. The Sidekick is a muzzloloader only and has a shorter frame that will not accept any other barrels.

Another option is if you already have a Handi-Rifle you can send your receiver into H&R/NEF and have either a blued or stainless Huntsman barrel fitted.

The scope base does not come with either one and must be purchased seperately.

I am not a fan of the NEF Handi, the reasons are well documented here.
That being said, when I ditched my rifle barrels, I kept my huntsman, because it shoots terrific, and is a great deer rifle (sb2 frame). It is of course d&t'd... Get the factory rail! I also mounted a scout scope as far up front on the rail as possible. For me it is the ideal most forgiving muzzleloader. 90gr 777 295 pb.. Don't care what primer... It's set up exactly as I'd like... So it only shoots deer!!!! I took the rod and mount off the gun, and put the rifle forend on. Hollowed out the the screw hole with a small rat tail, and made the thing even more accurate....

Thanks for all your help guys. I have looked at just getting another barrel but since I use my sb2 frame for my deer rifle and the fact that I got a gift certificate for Cabelas I may just go with the sidekick. I know that it will hold the accuracy when I switch the barrels btu I prefer to leave my 7mm08 barrel on the rifle frame untill I can it out for my .223 barrel. So far everything I have read about the muzzleloaders has been positive.
Tscott I know what you mean about going with the factory rail. A buddy of mine bought a weaver rail and even with the high rings it wasn't quite high enough for the hammer to clear the scope.

One again thanks for all the help. Chris

I have never shot the Huntsman past 50 yards.. I get clover leaf results at this range... Great accuracy!!! With what appears to be a powder reservoir in the end of the breech plug, I always assumed it was designed for powder, although others here clearly have luck with pellets. I find pre measured powder vials just as easy as pellets = never a hang fire!!!!
