Beretta Stampede load ...?
« on: May 30, 2004, 04:41:15 AM »
I am thinking about trying one of the Stampede models from Beretta in .45 colt. I shoot .45 colt in a Ruger Vaquero and my Marlin Cowboy 1894. I know you cannot shoot the hotter loads in the Beretta but would the following favorite load of mine be safe to shoot ...?

250gr rnfp Meister
9.0gr of Unique at 950fps
OAL of 1.60

I like the feel, looks, balance, and price of the Stampede.

I load 8 gr Unique under a 250 gr LRNFT. I've chronographed it at 810 fps.  Decent accuracy and no lead fouling. I doubt your 9 gr Unique load will see much over 900 fps. It should safe and within pressure limits. You will need a heavy roll crimp or else you'll get unburnt powder and position sensitive problems.

Iowegan ...

Thanks for the reply. I do not have a chronograph and therefore I rely on "published" velocities. I have heard more than once they are exaggerated in many instances. I have been wanting to buy a chrono but I always seem to think something else is higher on the priority list.

Beretta Stampede load ...?

I've had my Stampede for just over a year now. I'm very impressed with the overall quality of the piece with exception of the grips. I bought a set of Hogue wood grips for a Colt. Had to do a little fitting but now the gun looks and feels so much better. I bought the 7.5" 45 Colt in blue.

I'm getting 2.5" groups @ 25 yds with the 8 gr Unique load (250 gr bullet). I tried 230 gr bullets but the groups were not very good.  I didn't buy the Stampede for a "power gun", got several others in the safe that meet those needs. It's just a fun gun to shoot.

Hope you enjoy your Stampede.

I've used 7.6 grains of hp38 with no problem. In the manual 7.1 will give 916 fps but a Taffin load says 8.0 will give you 875fps so its kinda a mystery to me. This load feels pretty stout but cases fall out nicely with no signs of execive pressure in mine. Buffalo bore has a new load safe in all replicas of a 250 going 1000fps that would be perfect for outdoor defense you might want to take a look at. Yeah I didnt buy mine for power either but sure enough!

PGM - I own a Stampede in a .45 Colt with a 7 1/2" barrel (I also have a 5 1/2" Ruger Blackhawk as my "power" gun). The Stampede is better balanced, more fun to shoot, and has more than enough power for most hunting situations where a "sidearm" companion, rather than a specialized hunting arm is employed.  My best load is 8.7grs Unique (new or old) with a 255gr SWC or 240gr JHC Sierra at just over 900fps with either load. Don't pay any attention to "foot pounds" of energy, but do pay attention to range and bullet placement and you'll be amazed at how effective this combination works. I've tried a few higher pressure loads that stayed within the pressure requirements of Colt replicas and gained another 100fps or so; however, accuracy did not improve and recoil increased dramatically. (I tried 16.5gr of 2400 with a 255grSWC that was suggested by Sheriff Jim Wilson, Skeeter Skelton, and others, but I found the load at the max I would "stuff" into the action and still acheive easy extration. Again, no improvements resulted when used in my gun.) I did find 6.8gr Bullseye with either bullet also gave about as good velocity and accuracy as the Unique load, but seemed to be more sensitive to whether the pistol has been shot from a "barrel down" position (before firing) or a "barrel up" position. Buy and enjoy. My 2 cents - Jager
