Question on old iron quality? 100 year old iron
« on: January 18, 2006, 07:11:54 AM »
I was down at the river the other day and there are these huge two inch diameter at least 100 year old iron boat anchoring rings that are set in stone that get covered in water all the time yet they look almost as good as they might have when they were made. There is minimal rust and no paint on them. There is steel pipe that is recently made that is right next to them that is rusted to pieces. Could this old iron last so well  because of the way the iron was made ages ago?Was it more pure or virgin iron or is it the way they were made pounded together by blacksmiths?? I am also wondering if old iron cannons were made of the same last forever iron?
