Ram rod??
« on: December 16, 2005, 01:14:09 AM »
Thinking abut getting a Sidekick or a TC White mtn.  Everything I read on here seems like you have to carry a extra ram rod when shooting the sidekick (because the stock ram rod is next to useless!!)
Is there anyway to use a one piece ram rod without it sticking 4"-5" past the end of the barrel?
I really like the sidekick but I don't want to mess with haveing to carry a spare rod while hunting.(Very little of my deer hunting is from a stand)
Am  I wrong about the sidekicks ram rod ?
Or do you guys just accept  the fact of having to deal with carrying an extra rod?

The Sidekick ramrod does work if you use it as described in the owners manual.

I use a fiberglass ramrod at the range and keep the stock ramrod for hunting. When hunting I use the range rod at the truck to load the first bullet. then the Sidekick ramrod for additional loads.

If you push the bullet as far as it will go with the rod closed and then extend it and finish seating the bullet, it has worked every time for me. even with hard to load sabots.

The design is not the best, but it does work.

Good advice... Also I use flat nose hp Powerbelts. (Should be coming on sale at Walmart). Rod works fine afield with these. While on stand do yourself a favor, detach extend rod and leave easy access. You'll feel like an idiot, if you ever need a second shot, fumblin' around with that goofy ass ramrod, with a nice buck in front of you... (I been there)!

If you get the adater and a jag for pointed bullets listed in the other Ram rod post below it will load pointed bullets and clean your barrel fine. Its just the flat jag that comes on it is not made for cleaning or loading pointed bullets and is threaded 8/32 and all normal ML stuff is 10/32 so get the adater and a good jag and the ram rod works OK for field work.

I find using the collapsible rod to not be  a problem....I start the bullet  with the rod unlocked this allows it to turn and the bullet follows the twist . When I lock it I do not thread it all the way again this it to let the bullet follow the rifling more easily...I always load up a second shot after firing the first one. I find no need to carry a second rod.
