Any opinion on the differance between the two. Did Remington make improvements here or take a step back?

I like the Monte Carlo stock on the BDL.  Conversely, I do not like the straight stock on the CDL.

On the other hand, I do not like open sights on the BDL.  Conversely, I do like that the CDL has no sights.

Just my personal preferences.  Other than that, both the BDL and CDL have the same strong, reliable M700 actions.

BDLs are shiny finished, CDLs are satin finished which is no shortcoming in my book. Quite a few friends have been enticed to touch off the RUM in CDL and found the recoil to be quite moderate. The stock design being key here along with the R3 recoil pad. Less felt recoil is no shortcoming in my book. I shoot scopes on my rifles mounted low. Try to avoid rifles with irons lest I be tempted to compromise and end with a set of see through mounts where neither device performs at its best. But in the end I would buy the one I liked because thats really what matters most.

All my Remingtons are BDL. I like them shiny. That has never interfeared
when I was hunting. :D

Forward of back is going to have to be a personal decision.

Just got my first centerfire Remington rifle, a very gently used BDL in made in 1975 and chambered for .308 Win. (I also have an 870 12ga. and a M700ML muzzlestuffer in .50).

I like the BDL’s Monte Carlo stock and the shiny finish is a first on my rifles.  But I like it – its easily the prettiest rifle I own.  The new CDL’s are also very attractive.

As to the open sights, I find them a plus.  My first centerfire, a Ruger M77, and all my Marlins have both iron sights and scopes.  But clean tubes don’t bother me any either and most of my bolt guns fit that description.

Overall I’d say ‘sideways’.

I handled a  CDL (Classic De Lux) in a gun store that had a sale on them and I was very impressed with the fit, finish, bluing and the wood.  It was a really nice looking rifle.  It had a 24" barrel so you could have full ballistic advantage, but if you want a shorter 22" barrel you can have it sawed off.   I like that.  You can't lengthen a short barrel, but you can shorten a long one.
