Black mag 3 powder
« on: January 29, 2005, 05:20:18 AM »
Is anybody using Black mag 3 powder in cartridges?  The web site says you can, but there's not much load info.  It doesn't even really say whether or not to compress the powder, although it does say leaving air spaces should be avoided in muzzle loaders.  I take that to mean that a case should at least be filled to the base of the bullet, if not compressed.

Non corrosive, moisture resistant, good velocities, low pressure, and my wife not complaining about the smell in our Jeep from black powder all sound good.  The price of Black mag 3 is pretty steep, though, and I'd have to order it, making it more expensive still.  I'd sure hate to order a box full and find out it isn't so great.

Well, my gunshop just gave me a pound of this stuff for free, so I get to do some testing and answer my own questions.  I'll keep folks posted here, if anyone is interested.

Ya probably got so few replies 'cause so few have tried it.  Really want to know how it works.
Looking forward to hearing about your impressions

The prices I've seen have been a little too high for me to pay, but I'm used to Goex prices, so all the subs seem pricey.  I plan to test Black Mag 3 in 44 mag, .40-65, and 20 gauge.  I'll load it about like regular black powder, but perhaps with less compression, and chronograph the loads.  If I can get hold of a couple of buddies of mine, and drag them in from deer hunting, I can also get hold of a Ruger Old Army and a .50 inline muzzle loader for testing.

When I started this thread in January, I was giving serious thought to using a substitute, but shooting black powder regularly has turned out to be pretty easy.  It's unlikely I'll switch to any sub, now.  Especially since they all draw moisture, and require water for clean up, which makes them similar to black, anyway.
