I picked up a used heavy barrel Savage Tactic in .308 last week, and I finally made it to the range yesterday. I mounted a Weaver Grand Slam 4.5-14 on the rifle, and worked up a few loads with Varget and H4895 behind 150 and 165gr loads. Well, it pretty much liked everything I shot through it!
I went ahead and Flitz'd the barrel before shooting, and cleaned the barrel as well as possible. I also tuned the trigger a little, as those pre-AccuTrigger guns are adjustable (to a point). I think I got it down to just under 4lbs, with no creep or over travel.
Anyway, the first group with factory 150gr Core-Lokts went in to a 1.5" group. The second group went in to a little over 1.25", and I started with my reloads. Every load I tried went in to less than 1.5", including quite a few sub-MOA groups with bothe the Varget and H4895. The H4895 was much faster in my gun with 150gr Nosler BT's. The best group was around 3/4", with two bullets touching. With a little work, this is going to be an excellent shooting gun! Now all I need do is work on my OAL, and the gun should shoot even better!
